Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Andreas Orpheas Makos (AM) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Andreas Orpheas Makos by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Pandora here.

Interview with Andreas Orpheas Makos at Wednesday 29th of April 2015

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
AM: Pandora is a multifunctional sofa system concept, designed for studios with small space, with the purpose of converting the living-room by flexibly adapting to requirement, depending on the occasion, thus generating the most out of the available space. It has functions that serve four basic user needs; relaxation, entertainment, dining and studying, all integrated into one piece of furniture. It is consisted of a sofa/bed, cushions, three folding stools that can also function as footstools, a folding table, two roll-away benches and a drawer.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
AM: The main focus of the design was implementing all these different functions in one product to generate the most out of the available space, and retaining an appealing look following contemporary design aesthetics, and at the same time keeping the cost low and giving the product a sustainable character.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
AM: What would be the best thing for us regarding our design, is to see it come to life. Right now, it is still a concept and we would very much like to find a way to make it real.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
AM: This concept with all of its phases, including research and analysis, took around two months to be completed.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
AM: As students ourselves, we live in small studios with limited space, and we use the sofa for many activities such as studying, sleeping, dining, meeting with friends, etc. When you only have one room that functions as different rooms, you start thinking of ways to transform it to fit various occasions. This triggered us to think how we can implement all these states into a product that can play the role of many pieces of furniture in one, and still be a beautiful artifact to have. Thus, the Pandora idea was born.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
AM: Our design is not being produced or used by another company, and we are looking for ways to make this concept come to life.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
AM: See question No.05.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
