Interview with KAZ Shirane at Tuesday 22nd of April 2014 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? KS: Architecture should be change Soft, Light and Moving. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? KS: This work is a first Zipper Architecture in the world. We considered how architecture can move and what is influenced by moving. So We focus on window. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? KS: This moment is the first time to award in foreign country. We want to be known by lots of people. So we would like to become a bridge between abroad and Japan for young generation designer. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? KS: This work is the third prototype based on this idea. First of all works got 1st prize of furniture competition judged by Toyo Ito,2007. The second work is booth design which got DSA award that is one of most prestigious prize of space design in Japan,2012. This work takes 2months to solve problems, and 1month to make it. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? KS: I believe this idea is suitable for 21st architecture concept. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? KS: We pleased to talk with them. And we will develop the work together. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? KS: I think architect should challenge for experiment. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? KS: Japanese traditional house is useful. For example, Fusuma, Shoji. Because when I was childhood, I used them to make a own room or party room for parents. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? KS: At first we have to think about that can zipper be used for architecture. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? KS: Not only big kaleidoscope but also making a kaleidoscope changing by the movement of the person. It means the space has like a emotion. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? KS: The panels could be always opened and closed, So it seems like a "WINK". FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? KS: computation:Rhino and grasshopper Manual: laser-cut FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? KS: To use zipper for creating a scpace FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? KS: We should think all of them from start point. but many sponsor contribute material for this work. we appreciate them. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? KS: To make a new culture. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? KS: Origami which is traditional play in Japan is useful. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? KS: Until now, the zipper has been developed for a soft cloth. However, by using the new technology such as laser-cut and computation design. I've managed to connect with hard planes to each other. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? KS: We want to work world wide and know people who has different culture each other. Italy is one of most prestigeous country about design. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? KS: Vision and Dream is super important. If we think about only technical things, the work was not realized. FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions? KS: I could answer everything!
