Interview with Isabella Liu at Saturday 1st of February 2014

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
IL: The design was inspired by my personal story. Because I believe in the essential similarities across people’s emotional experiences, and draws upon a narrative approach to my artwork in which her own personal life experiences are expressed in such a way as to encourage audiences to relate to my work and draw inspiration from solidarity.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
IL: My Main focus in designing is how to present my concept perfectly, convincingly. Although the design is inspired from my personal story, for finding new impulses for my idea, I still have large amount of research and experiments to do, so that I can make sure that my design and making achieve a perfection.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
IL: First of all, I still think the concept has much potential to explore. I would like to further develop it, hopefully can create larger beautiful collection pieces. Secondly, I think my concept somehow could empower people who are experiencing overwhelming feelings of helplessness and fear. I think it could be develop into a business concept to help those people, or encourage audiences to relate to my work and draw inspiration from solidarity.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
IL: The research took me long time, from interviewing to contextual studies, about more than one month was all about researching. Once I know my direction and how to do it, then making and testing processes were quicker. I spent about 3 weeks designing and making the piece.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
IL: Because this concept coming from my personal experience, which is so close to me, when I design and make it, I feel so familiar with it. My pure emotions become very naturally imbued in the creating processes.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
IL: It hasn't produced by other company yet. so far I produce myself and exhibit my work at international galleries and exhibitions.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
IL: Because my passion about contemporary artwork and contemporary jewellery. I like to create a piece of art work which is coming from my surroundings or experiences, because they are so close to me, touch me naturally. When I create a piece of jewellery or artwork, I have to be moved first, then I am able to move my audiences.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
IL: Yes, some great narrative jewellery artists have inspired me a lot, like Jo Pond, zoe arnold, and so on.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
IL: My targeted customers are contemporary jewellery lover, collectors, galleries.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
IL: I hope to encourage audiences to relate to my work and draw inspiration from solidarity. My work is intended to be appreciated both on the body as well as off as a piece of museum art in their own right.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
IL: The name of the design, sounds like a beginning of a poem, which telling you a story. I hope that once audiences see or hear the name, then a picture of a story revive from the work.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
IL: I used different jewellery making tools, like scoring tools, laser cutting machine, enamelling making tools, etc. Also some painting tools, cause I used tea bag hand-dyed the antique book pages.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
IL: I think the most unique aspect of my design coming from my inspiration, the inspiration is relative to my personal story and emotions. there is nothing more special than something coming from an individual's emotional story.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
IL: I only work myself on design and creating this design. I only get feedback or advice from other people.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
IL: It's a pure hand making piece of contemporary jewellery. So the excellent hand craftsmanship is very important. besides, I use laser cutting machine, which helps me cutting out a perfect outline on antique book pages.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
IL: It was not influenced by any data, but it was influenced by interviewing many people who has similar emotional experiences.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
IL: My Main challenge is how to present my concept perfectly, convincingly. Although the design is inspired from my personal story, for finding new impulses for my idea, I still have large amount of research and experiments to do, so that I can make sure that my design and making achieve a perfection.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
IL: I am very confidence in my design. The concept is spiritually inspiring, along with her education in Fine Art and Fashion Design allows her to combine a range of artistic disciplines and apply them to her work with great effect. because I am confident to my work, and I have many positive feedback about it. so I decided to submit to A'Design Award and Competition.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
IL: Starting from the research, I have engaged with significant of methodologies, which inspired me to go further. Besides, I have learnt some new skills and craftsmanship during the processed of creating and making.
