FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
JS: Simplicity is the main principle here- to give a clear function and purpose for the design. It is intended to use by people and they are my inspiration.
FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
JS: Main focus of this design is to achieve fresh approach and looks of tableware- raise the question of its importance in everyday life.
FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
JS: After design was awarded it made it clear that the only goal now is to enter production. Make it available for more people.
FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
JS: It is hard to say, as it is a successor of another design. All in all, roughly it was two-month period.
FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
JS: I was always thinking about designing something small to start with. Tableware is most accessible piece around the house or in public catering sector. It has certain limitations for innovation in materials and especially shape and that got my attention. I found challenge in an acceptable size work.
FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
JS: Currently it is made to order and I am seeking options of mass production. I am always open for offers.
FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
JS: Main reason for this design to happen was observation of environment and how I understand and feel it. During time spent at home if to be specific. Need to share those observations where main drive to design this particular piece.
FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
JS: During the process I came a cross interesting designs by others, but could not say that it was influenced by something or someone in particular.
FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
JS: I imagine that customer of this piece is design-conscious person who would like to try something new. I do not think that there should be an age group in this case.
FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
JS: I think its multifunctional option and the way the whole idea is presented sets this design apart.
FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
JS: The name directly addresses the idea. This particular design is intended for a person who lives alone- For One.
FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
JS: Whole set of tools were implemented to evolve the design. From sketching to CAD drafting, paper models, CNC milled foam models and hand thrown porcelain prototypes. You name it!
FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
JS: This bowl-plate piece can be interactive and influence the way you eat. It can change your habits and how you think about meal. I think that is the most unique aspect of it and it is quite rear in tableware design.
FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
JS: This design would be impossible to finalize without the help from others. Main consultants were ceramicist and mold makers who had more or less direct influence on final product. Their input is priceless.
FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
JS: Technological aspect has direct impact of designs accessibility for a broader audience. Classical approach and use of extensive knowledge of the pottery industry makes it easy and cheap to produce this design.
FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
JS: Collecting various pieces from home and consultation with production line management influenced designs optional size range. This was an interesting time as a learning curve and how boundaries blurred between manufacturing and designs future place- home.
FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
JS: Main challenge was accepting and implementing consultants comments because design had unusual decisions for porcelain slip casting method. There were alternatives but they were inappropriate for the given price-point. Sustaining the design closest to the concept was challenging and it turned out really well.
FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
JS: Before entering design competition project was published in different digital environments and received good feedback. I wanted to test my skills in a more competitive and higher quality environment.
FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
JS: I guess it was a good way to understand and remember most important parts of the project that would have to keep track of. In other words I learned how not to lose the goal.
