Interview with Cristina Orozco Cuevas at Monday 14th of April 2014 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? CO: Reading and learning the braille system through a very common and friendly material: textile FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? CO: I wanted to design something for people with visual problems and make a textile with a social meaning. A fabric that could be produced inssutrially and massively. An occidental universal textile. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? CO: To contact entities for blinded people in order to make projects with this textile. Provide these organizations with a tool to teach the system and open an opportunity to learn with new materials. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? CO: It tooked me months, almost a year because I made a first protoype and the only propperty was the difference of textures between the yarns in the cells and in the back. After months I learnt and apply by a research of my own a new technique which finally could give the circles a volume that really could be different from the plain surface. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? CO: I pursuit the idea of creating something that besides being commercial or not, something with a real meaning and challenging. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? CO: My designed was made in a textile Mill as a personal project. I am planning that organizations contact me fot campaigns or new developments social and commercial. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? CO: evolution of my career and always new challenges FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? CO: No FS: Who is the target customer for his design? CO: people with vision problems and blindsight through ONG organizations FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? CO: because it is new, fresh, social plus it contains good aesthetics FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? CO: Braille wikipedia defnition says: "It is a is a tactile writing system used by the blind and the visually impaired" FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? CO: yarns, looms, CAD Software and a lot of patience. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? CO: that it really works and one day you can have 150 meters of this fabric woven. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? CO: Nobody. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? CO: Everything has to do with techonology about this design. You cannot mad it without it. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? CO: Yes, i ts influenced by doing some research of braille language, how the cells and points work as a code and how when you combine some codes form numbers or capital letters. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? CO: Finding the right technique and yarns mixture to get the high and low relief. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? CO: Because I already submitted it on Mexico and Spain. I want to go global because I consider it unique. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? CO: I improve with techniques and developments on weaves. The main and most important thing that I accomplished was the beginning of experimenting with jacquard industrial looms from now on. Of course mills across the world where owners want to cooperate and develop this kind of projects. FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions? CO: This is a design for everybody and inspires designers to be better and responsable.
