Interview with Anushka Contractor at Saturday 26th of July 2014 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? AC: I was asked to create a good looking tough table for a showroom. Against the idea of going typical with a solid looking base forced me to think in the opposite direction. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? AC: Being a table which could hold more than 200kgs of weight, I wanted to create something which would make everyone underestimate the strength it could hold. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? AC: I would present my design in furniture showrooms. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? AC: It took me 2 weeks to design. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? AC: As mentioned in point no. 01, I was asked to create a good looking tough table for a showroom. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? AC: My design is already created and displayed in the furniture showroom which was asked. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? AC: A requirement from my client to create a good looking tough table. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? AC: Only my worker helped me build it explaining the pros and cons of this design. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? AC: Anyone. As this design can be used for many types of tables. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? AC: A thin, sleek look with the soft outline for a huge size mentioned. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? AC: Contractor is my last name - Close friends call me 'Conti'. If you see the design of the table base from the bottom, it is cross-legged. So thats how the name of this design combines to make - Conticross. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? AC: I used 3D Rhinoceros for modelling and autocad for detailing it. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? AC: The cross-legged thin, sleek base. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? AC: None. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? AC: 3D for modelling. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? AC: Not really. There was an existing table base with the client. I had to get rid of that style and create something totally different but using the same material they had. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? AC: I wanted to avoid any kind of bridge support between the Metal sections but it required one at the center to hold all the weight. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? AC: I was searching for a competition online which matched the category with my design. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? AC: I learnt the balance technique. FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions? AC: Yes. This particular designed table can be used as work table, dining table, size table, stool, stand, pedestal, etc.
