Interview with Juergen Josef Goetzmann at Friday 6th of September 2013 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? JG: My idea was to develop a seating furniture collection with a new base construction - xifix2base. The new rack-system is based on the required minimum of physics and material and allows different seating possibilities. The inspiration for xifix2base chair-one was to create a dining chair / office chair. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? JG: Slim, but comfortable - with armrests. Harmonious from all sides, also from below. Without corners. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? JG: To find a company which will produce and distribute my chair. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? JG: It took 3 month to complete this design concept, but it is still an uncompleted project because there are various seating possiblilities. xifix2base chair-two, chair-three ... FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? JG: My challenge was to develop a whole collection of chairs and armchairs based on my own rack system, according to classic metal pipe chairs. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? JG: I plan to sell or lease my product. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? JG: Curiosity. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? JG: No. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? JG: the average citizen. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? JG: It is a light chair - without ornamentations and additional constructions. He is intended for smaller apartments and offices. The minimized one pipe construction is immediately visible. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? JG: The name - xifix - is my pseudonym - Juergen Goetzmann - alias xifix - the one man group. xifix2base - is my second rack-system. chair-one - is my first chair in this rack-system. These working titles are a system to catalogue my designs. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? JG: Wire and plasticine. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? JG: The most unique aspect is the endless pipe construction so I created a loop form, which achieves the stability of the rack. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? JG: No. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? JG: To reduce the technology to a minimum. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? JG: The ergonomics of the chair was adapted to the physiognomy of an average person. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? JG: To form the one-pipe-rack with a loop that matches the ergonomics of man - under consideration of the esthetics and the feasibility. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? JG: To win an international design competition, which was tendered by Italy the mother country of design, would be my greatest fulfilment. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? JG: I learned that there is no end to create one-pipe-chairs. In the future I like to succeed in more artistic forms. FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions? JG: No - but I like to use this possibility to express thanks for the professional tendering and support of this competition.
