Home > Winners > Design #28662 >Interview
Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Ian Hughes (IH) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Ian Hughes by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design AS1 here.

Interview with Ian Hughes at Friday 8th of March 2013

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
IH: Reinvent the shuttlecock

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
IH: Bringing something new to the sport of Badminton

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
IH: This design took 3 months

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
IH: The adjustability of the shuttle really sets it apart from anything else on the market

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
IH: AS1 equals Adjustable Shuttlecock 1. The number one signifying this as being the first ever adjustable shuttlecock

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
IH: I did a large amount of research before diving into sketch and model ideation. For this project we were assigned to do 100 sketch models. Focusing on the behavior of the shuttle and the type of mechanism that I wanted to use to adjust it.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
IH: My favorite part of this design is the rippled nose piece, because it fulfills two purposes seamlessly. Adding aerodynamics and grip.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
