Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Julia Subbotina (JS) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Julia Subbotina by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Passion here.

Interview with Julia Subbotina at Wednesday 13th of March 2013

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
JS: My inspiration? Desire of unlimited joy! This bathing room embodies the Yang and the Yin, the black and the white, passion and peace. Natural marble gives this room an original and unique feel. And as we are always looking for a natural feel, I have decided to use organic materials, which create a truly peaceful atmosphere. The ceiling is like the final touch that brings an inside harmony to this room. Multitude of mirrors makes it look more spacey. Switches, sockets and accessories were all selected to fit the brushed chrome color scheme. Brushed chrome looks classy against black tile, and matches the interior. The ceiling represents a pure passion and reunion of the Yang and the Yin. Rays of light make this bathroom even more expressive.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
JS: I created the story called “Passion”. It became the key to the concept of the interior. As for the bathroom, there are a lot of mirrors in it. The communications for the ceiling lights are hidden into a closet in the next room. The colours of both the furniture and the tiles are pastel. All this makes the room bigger and more spacious. I have made it as open as possible, removing all the unnecessary items. I even managed to enlarge it visually with the help of some tricks.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
JS: I am planning to publish the description of the bathroom design different magazines.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
JS: When inspiration is combined with a clear understanding of your goal, the idea quickly becomes comprehensible. However, there are some tiny details, which require your full attention and a meticulous work.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
JS: I decided to create the bathroom and the bedroom in the same style. However, while in the bathroom the passion is flourishing, the bedroom is all about equanimity and harmony after an emotional outlet.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
JS: I work for myself. I created and worked upon the design myself and I want to sell it myself.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
JS: My lob is to create beauty both in architecture and in design. Therefore, the bathroom was no exception.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
JS: I was working upon the idea, visualisation, graphs, process control and choosing the materials.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
JS: A space like this perfectly fits those who are deeply fond of natural materials and advanced technique.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
JS: I cannot imagine the design of my bathroom which is not full of emotions. Everyone is impressed by the energetic ceiling and contrast walls! Do not forget that you can always hange the colour of the ceiling lights. For example, red lights will make the passion even more extreme. Then result can be easily seen – the room is full of passion!

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
JS: The bathroom is called “Passion”. This name is most accurate, it reflects the relationships between a calm tranquil man and an emotional ardent woman. Opposites attract, and the concept of the interior is based on this principle . You have to experience passion to create a truly passionate room.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
JS: I used AutoCad to make the graphs, and 3dmax for visuals.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
JS: 1. Unique ceiling design. The ceiling is covered with nacreous sparkles. When the light from the wall lamp falls on the ceiling, the ceiling glitters. This effect gives the interior a premium look. 2. Wall tile and floor mosaic are made of natural marble. I have deliberately chosen contrasting colors of marble. Light-colored marble is calm and peaceful, while the darker one is elegant and full of grace. 3. The floor is coated with light-colored marble mosaic. 4. Ornamental wall made of dark tile acts as the framing of the mirror. The room dimensions were taken into account when choosing the design and size of tile, to give the ornament a nice and accomplished look. 5. The mirror and its framing were designed to embrace the existing ventilation shafts rather than having to alter them; 6. The mirror’s bevel makes it look more like a framed painting. 7. The color of the mirror is OpticWhite. 8. I’ve chosen a universal bath tub, which can be used as a hydromassage tub and as a shower stall. 9. Under-sink furniture and the sink itself are tailor-made, as it was really hard to find standard models to fit my design. 10. Accesories, switches and sockets are of a brushed chrome color. 11. High quality German mixer taps. 12. The choice of a radial bath tub was preconditioned by the scarcity of space (5 m2) 13. The towel dryer is of the same color as the wall, so that it doesn’t visually cramp the room. 14. LED strip lightning gives our clients the opportunity to change the lightning to fit their mood. Power adapters are hidden in the bedroom closet (adjacent room). This enabled us to save overhead space in the bathroom.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
JS: I had agreements only with the factories that I could rely upon.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
JS: in this project I used only the latest materials and equipment. The hot tub is equipped with a shower stall, the toilet bowl – with bidet. The marble is decorated with three dimensional image, and as for the lighting, I used the most advanced LED strips.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
JS: The process of implementing the design was easy for the construction team, as, for example, the tailor-made black panel picture from Italy was already the right size and needed only assembling. However, since it is impossible to find spare parts for a tailor-made project, mistakes were not an option. Constructing the bath tub pedestal was a labor-intensive and time-consuming task, as it had to match the tub dimensions perfectly. The same is true for ceiling painting works, as we needed sharp angles and straight clean lines. This bathing room is fully furnished, the furniture was also tailor-made, which was preconditioned by the limited space we had.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
JS: I wanted to share my project with the whole world. This design is not just a pretty picture, but a functional up to date space.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
JS: . If you want to turn your idea into reality, you have to be persistent and have a clear understanding of what is allowed and what is not. As for design, sometimes the constructors offered me to give up some things or to choose the technical solutions I was not satisfied with! Therefore I had to take part in the construction during all its stages so that I could achieve the effect I wanted to see.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
JS: You should not be afraid to love! This feeling always changes everything into something special.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
