Interview with Roman Klemencov at Tuesday 12th of March 2013 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? RK: Klaipeda is the third largest city in Lithuania with a long history, situated next to the Baltic Sea. Getting an inspiration from calligraphy we designed the whole anniversary visual identity system: slogan “Klaipeda - City of Good Winds”, logotype, promo and representational materials, Klaipeda historical panorama, kinetic spatial composition “Klaipeda. 1252-2012 Historic Pendulum” as well as an interactive composition which metaphorically was called “Birds Chirping”. About "Klaipeda" logotype. Merging the words “City”, “Wind”, “Calligraphy”, “Anniversary” we designed a logotype – an attractive, vivid, emotion-rich, freestyle calligraphically written and digitized “Klaipeda” name. The official Klaipeda City heraldry red/yellow color palette was used as the main Klaipeda 1252-2012 visual identity color. Personally, we could compare it to jazz, with its continuous pulsation, rhythmic improvisation, expression, joy and a kind of freedom. We tried to find the proper balance between harmony, action and expressivity. It reflects optimistic emotions through attractiveness, visuality and style. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? RK: This design has been already produced for Klaipeda City Municipality (2012) FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? RK: Air-Kinetic sculptures of Alexander Calder. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? RK: Calligraphy, Digital computer graphics, Print production, Interactive elements. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? RK: Originality, Innovation & Actuality. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? RK: A significant role +++++++++++ FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? RK: Time limit, actually this project has been realized in 2 month (from start to end: main idea generation, print material project development, engineering - spatial compositions, montage etc. ) FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? RK: Knowing that "A'design Award" competions is highly prestigious award, our group decided to submit designed "Klaipeda 760-th anniversary" visual identity project.
