Interview with Tay Meng Kiat Nicholas at Monday 24th of September 2012 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? NT: The main concept is to use the see-saw concept to make the plug eject. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? NT: Creating a easier remover of plug by using one hand. Using this one hand press to remove and disconnect the circuit is a very important factor of making lives easier. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? NT: I have intention of having a good-will to give or help company that are interested in product. For the goodwill to spread the idea for everyone. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? NT: It was 1 month on the thinking portion. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? NT: My Friend, Gan was very pissed off when he could not take his plug out of the switch when he was talking on his smartphone. I design this to help everyone. I pursuit an inspiration. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? NT: All options are available for me. As long it is for the goodwill of everyone who needs it. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? NT: The See- saw in my house district's playground FS: Who is the target customer for his design? NT: Everyone especially elderly FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? NT: This design is new yet it uses the current technology to create a better life. Other designs lack of the realism of how to solve the ejection part, using cheap material or rely on spring which is unable to do the job. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? NT: I would call it The Gan Switch. Because my friend Gan gave me the problem to solve. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? NT: It can eject the plug and disconnect the circuit. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? NT: I actually thought of using the spring to eject the plug out, but in reality it is not possible as spring force is not strong enough and it would rust and spoil. I would not work in the end till i was thinking of using a lever. With that lever idea in mind, i decide to use the see-saw concept to design this. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? NT: I have intention of sending to IF competition and Red Dot: Design concept next year. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? NT: Design Products With Realism and Improve Life Of Others.
