Interview with Claire Requa at Sunday 21st of April 2013

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
CR: To design a flat-pack piece of small furniture that would supplement and complement Claire de Lune Chandelier.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
CR: That the pieces of acrylic were off-cuts that I could make into a piece of functional and beautiful furniture.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
CR: To sell it to more shops.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
CR: It took several months, as I was working with an engineer on the fine machine tooled parts, like the assembly screws.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
CR: This was an inspiration to complement the Chandelier.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
CR: At the moment the design is produced by myself, but would like to sell/lease the production rights.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
CR: An interest in small furniture.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
CR: No other designers were involved.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
CR: The target is the conscious consumer that is interested in quality.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
CR: This is flat-pack, but beautiful and well-thought out design.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
CR: Chandelier Table - not very original, but relates it to Claire de Lune Chandelier.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
CR: Laser cut acrylic, special tooled parts for assembly.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
CR: The Chandelier etching design on the surfaces.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
CR: I worked closely with engineers for the machine tooled screws.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
CR: As the parts had to fit snugly, to make the table stable, detail had to be paid to the laser cutting process.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
CR: The only research was to see if there were similar products already on the market.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
CR: Working with the engineers was a challenge. Making them see my vision.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
CR: I sent pictures of my product with a short description of my design.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
CR: I learnt more about the materials that I might use in the future, the limitations and the advantages of certain materials over others.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
