Evolution Light by Luca Matta

Home > Winners > Design #24789 >Interview
Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Luca Matta (LM) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Luca Matta by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design EVOLUTION here.

Interview with Luca Matta at Wednesday 25th of April 2012

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
LM: The main inspiration was the design of the screw of Archimedes. The 'evolution of this project has changed the world in the field of mechanical engineering and construction. the Archimede phrase "geve me a lever / light and, i will move / enlighten the world" is surely is that better suited to this type of project.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
LM: The main objective was to create a lot of "evolved families” of lights, or better, to create between a light and the other a perfect continuity and harmony in lighting.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
LM: I'd like to implement in the thought and the project is currently made only in the abstract on paper and I hope that some company is interested in making my product

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
LM: To create this type of geometry it took me a few minutes, but the work more hard was to "adapt" the geometric shape to a product that must operate, particularly illuminating, and has to be sold

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
LM: It was a project still in the drawer for more than 5 years. Now I hope that this project will take the flight and could have a good success.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
LM: I wish that this product was acquired, understood and engineered by a serious company, able to produce it and market it without changing the nature of the lamp.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
LM: The passion, the tenacity and the challenge. A well-known Italian writer Vittorio Alfieri said: "I wanted always wanted, I wanted very strongly", this means that if any person has a strong will can go everywhere.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
LM: No, there aren’t any other designer that helped the influence the design of my work.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
LM: Fontana Arte, Luce Plan, I think they are the companies that come closest to my style.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
LM: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts is the evolution of form.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
LM: I try to forget the computer and mobile phone, listening to great music .... I always work at first by hand. Only after I realized what kind of shape I can give to the product, I begin to use the mouse and to process my project with computer. In the end, but not always, I make a small model to understand the 'ergonomics and' visual impact that can have the product.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
LM: The playful- functional aspect, a product does not talk to me if it does not say anything. Alberto Munari great teacher, for example, taught us to listen to children, who know nothing about design, yet they are an inexhaustible source of creativity.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
LM: I’ve realized this project by myself.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
LM: Perhaps the OLED technology, but I'm not sure yet. But because of excessive costs I will adopt the OLED technology. One limitation of OLED technology is that it’s already old. The next year it should be marketed the new quantum dot technology that it’s less expensive and more performant than the OLED technology.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
LM: I did not know what type of lighting technology applied to the lamp, was truly a feat!

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
LM: I knew it was an innovative project in terms of aesthetic and functional aspects, but 5/6 years ago, OLED technology was not yet on sale, then the project has stopped.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
LM: I still have to learn a lot ..... the technology is evolving.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
LM: Did you work even during the night to realize this project? Well, very often, during the night, I fell asleep in my studio, and immediately after waking up I asked myself another question: "Who made me do all this?"

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
