Interview with Olena Sydoruk at Wednesday 18th of May 2011 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? OS: This is a coffee table and stools named “Flow”. Simply elegant home accessories conceived as the lightweight stools that perform beautifully as side tables, foot stools, gaming, and laptop tables. They also stack to form dramatic shelving elements. The furniture set was inspired by natural wood grain patterns. The design creates a graceful interplay between organic lines and a contemporary look. The curves softly flow from one another creating a unique flowing illusion that gives the set its stunningly light look. Its’ unique space saving design meets the needs of family members and their guests. Users can change the appearance and utilize space by using multiple configurations with its five pieces appreciating the shape from any angle. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? OS: Working on this design I wanted to find a harmonious balance of functionality and style in everyday objects while creating a piece that effortlessly fuses the worlds of sculptural art and product design. The design is very simple yet complicated and refined. It is a different approach to furnishing by creating something beautiful and useful which appeals to the different tastes of users. The mass production of this design would be quite easy and inexpensive. The set can be made of many different materials; some of them as plastic and plywood would be very cost effective from a mass production stand point. Conversely, the design could also be handmade from exotic types of wood, making it much more expensive but stunningly beautiful. Shipping would also be convenient as all of the pieces nest saving space and packaging. This same solution is also an excellent selling point to the Consumer who can use and store the pieces neatly in their home or office. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? OS: I would like to see it in production. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? OS: It was designed by pursuing inspiration. It was an impulsive idea that became real quite fast. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? OS: In the short term I am planning to produce this design myself but am open to selling or licensing the production rights. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? OS: I love functional and beautiful furnishing. My design works are deeply inspired by the nature and this is no exception. This design was inspired by the patterns in the wood of my bedroom door. After I showed my sketches, everyone told me that I should make a model, and when people saw the model they asked me where they could buy it. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? OS: The design is simple and user-friendly. It can be used by almost any family member and does not require any assembly. Everyone can benefit and appreciate this simple space saving furniture set. Each user can change the appearance and utilize space by using multiple configurations with its five pieces. The change in Flow can accommodate each individual’s mood or creativity. Flow is an elegant home accessory and its adaptability is wonderfully suited for many settings from corporate to residential. When the stools are not in use they fit beautifully under the coffee table creating a stunning view from every angle. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? OS: It is an amazingly stylish set of furniture that can add the perfect finishing touch with its charismatic presence. This is a cutting-edge design for those seeking something completely different and modern or just a practical set of furniture. A piece that effortlessly fuses the worlds of sculptural art with product design, Flow makes a huge visual impact within many styles of interior. Flow combines the luxurious look of gloss acrylic or sophisticated matte wood. The contemporary, sculptural frames give the set its distinctive edge with an enormous breath of air. Each piece of the set is formed from one single bent surface. The pieces placed together create a very light and open appeal. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? OS: I named this design “Flow”. Its organic lines softly flow from one another creating the unique flowing illusion that gives the set its stunning light look. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? OS: Manual sketching, CAD, Photoshop, 3D printing (scaled prototype). FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? OS: This furnishing does not overwhelm the room, the air flows in-between the pieces giving the furniture a lightweight look. This furniture set would be a center piece in any room as an aesthetically attractive art object and a necessary furniture piece. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? OS: I think this design deserves to be seeing and using by many people all over the world.
