Interview with Silva Kegulian at Monday 16th of May 2011

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
SK: love of Natural elements

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
SK: i wanted to keep the real look and feel of the actual lemon slice and show that any item can be turned into a nice piece of Jewelry.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
SK: Manucafturing numbered pieces for distribution purpuses espacially that we have the poeple of Japan intrested in it already !

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
SK: it took us 2 week to achieve this first sample.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
SK: it was pure inspiration and a challenge to both me and my husband , I remember at dinner we were dicussing work and i suddenly asked him :What if you mold a real lemon slice for me ? He laughed and said : are you questionning my abilites ? and the project took off based on that challenge ,once the slice was done i had to find the right seeds to make the chain .

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
SK: The designs is made in our facility in Downtown Los Angeles, we will produce limited quantities to sell.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
SK: It began with an Idea and we pursued it to see if it'll work .

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
SK: Not really, just me and my Husband

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
SK: anyone who likes innovative Jewelry

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
SK: Well first of all this necklace is a replica of a real one, plus the fact that it is made from reclaimed metals makes it even more organic, this piece shows that it could be done and you can accessorize by having nature and envirenoment in mind.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
SK: the name is simple and says it all . Lemon slice

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
SK: we used mainly Jewelry tools , the process is lost wax casting that involves law frequency centrufical casting machine, deburring wheels, soldering tequniques and final antiquing process.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
SK: two things, the ability to obtain a rubber mold from a fresh lemon slice . Second casting with recycled metals.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
SK: Team work between me and my Husband.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
SK: Low frequency casting machine which comes from Famous Italy !

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
SK: this done basiclly on Experience, long years of making Jewelry gives you the skills to achieve and reach new levels.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
SK: the main challenge was first to able to mold the slice without damaging the surface, to obtain its realistic look and for it to have an appeal as a wearable piece of Jewelry

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
SK: Pure Luck ! my friend is a member and i thought it would interesting to enter my piece and see what happens! i'm glad i Did !

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
SK: You never stop learning , every single detail counts.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
SK: I just want to thank you for this opportunity ! We need to spread the word that Jewelry can be even better when made from recycled metals !
