Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Arvin Maleki (AM) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Arvin Maleki by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Nova Pilot here.

Interview with Arvin Maleki at Tuesday 7th of May 2024

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
AM: The driving force behind the Nova Pilot was to create an interface that seamlessly integrates with the vehicle's aesthetics while elevating the user experience through technology. It is designed to simplify the interaction between the driver and the vehicle, enhancing both functionality and safety.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
AM: My primary focus was on creating a user-friendly interface that would reduce driver distraction and potential accidents by clearly displaying essential information through innovative dual monitors—behind the steering wheel and the central console.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
AM: Following its success in winning the Silver Award at the A’ Design Award & Competition, I am exploring opportunities for further enhancements and potential collaborations with automotive manufacturers to integrate this HMI into future vehicles.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
AM: The development of the Nova Pilot spanned precisely one year, during which the concept was thoroughly refined from initial sketches to the final prototype.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
AM: This concept stemmed from a personal inspiration to improve automotive safety and usability. It was an independent project driven by a vision to integrate cutting-edge design with practical functionality.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
AM: I am in preliminary discussions with several leading automotive companies interested in licensing this technology, aiming for broad implementation in upcoming vehicle models.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
AM: The opportunity to combine my expertise in industrial design with innovative automotive technologies inspired me to develop a solution that could significantly improve driver interaction and safety.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
AM: While the concept is original, I consulted ongoing advancements in user interface design and automotive ergonomics to ensure a state-of-the-art development.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
AM: The target customers are forward-thinking automotive manufacturers and tech-savvy consumers who prioritize safety, innovation, and design in their vehicles.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
AM: Nova Pilot uniquely integrates dual monitoring systems that cohesively display critical information, reducing cognitive load and enhancing driver focus, which is a novel approach in automotive design.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
AM: The name 'Nova Pilot' suggests a pioneering guide, with 'Nova' indicating newness and innovation, and 'Pilot' referring to leadership and navigation—embodying the essence of this design.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
AM: I utilized Figma for the entire UI/UX design process, leveraging its robust features to create interactive prototypes that were essential for testing and refining the user interface.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
AM: The most distinctive feature is the dual display system, which ensures that essential information is presented in a clear, concise, and visually appealing manner directly in the driver's line of sight.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
AM: This project was a collaborative effort that included UI/UX designers, software developers specializing in React Native and Node.js, and automotive engineers—all contributing to a holistic design approach.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
AM: Technology is crucial in the Nova Pilot, facilitating a personalized, interactive interface that adapts to user preferences while ensuring that all interactions are intuitive and secure.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
AM: Extensive empirical research, including user studies and ergonomic assessments, was pivotal. These studies helped us understand the optimal placement and content of displays to enhance usability and safety.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
AM: One of the major challenges was integrating the technology in a way that felt intuitive and unobtrusive, maintaining aesthetic integrity while enhancing functional value.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
AM: I submitted the Nova Pilot to the A’ Design Award & Competition to benchmark it against the highest standards of global design excellence, where it proudly earned a Silver Award.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
AM: This project sharpened my skills in multidisciplinary collaboration and deepened my understanding of user-centered design in the automotive context, significantly enhancing my approach to integrating technology and design.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
AM: I'd like to highlight that the Nova Pilot is not just about technological innovation; it's about crafting an experience that transforms everyday driving into something simpler, safer, and more enjoyable, setting new industry standards in automotive HMI design.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
