Interview with Nobuaki Miyashita at Saturday 1st of June 2024

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
NM: My design was primarily driven by the need to modernize an outdated facility while infusing it with Orico’s strong corporate identity. I drew inspiration from the concept of flexibility and privacy, aiming to revitalize the space to foster both collaborative and private work environments.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
NM: My main focus was to create a multifunctional space that caters to modern training methods and informal interactions, enhancing the overall learning experience and employee satisfaction. I aimed to achieve a design that is both functional and symbolic of Orico's values.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
NM: I plan to monitor the effectiveness of the current design and make iterative improvements to ensure it continues to meet the needs of Orico’s evolving training programs and corporate strategies.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
NM: It took me about a year and a half to fully develop and refine the concept for the Orico Training Center.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
NM: This particular concept was commissioned by Orient Corporation to address specific challenges in their existing facility, which no longer aligned with their operational and cultural needs.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
NM: The design is currently being implemented by Orico in their training center. There are no plans to sell or lease the production rights, as it was custom-tailored for Orico’s specific needs.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
NM: I was motivated by the challenge of transforming an existing structure into a vibrant, modern space that aligns with the client’s identity and functional requirements.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
NM: While my design is original, I was inspired by current trends in corporate architecture and interior design that emphasize flexible workspaces and technology integration.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
NM: The direct beneficiaries of this design are the employees and trainees of Orico who use the facility for various training and development programs.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
NM: What sets this design apart is the incorporation of customized elements, like the credit card-themed rooms and the strategic use of Orico’s brand colors, creating a unique and memorable space.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
NM: The name ‘Orico Training Center’ directly reflects its purpose and affiliation, emphasizing its role as a central facility for training within the Orico corporation.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
NM: I used a range of design tools including CAD software for architectural design, 3D modeling tools for visualization, and project management software to oversee the execution.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
NM: The integration of capsule bed units designed as both sleeping and office pods, tailored to reflect the various credit card themes issued by Orico, stands out as the most unique feature.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
NM: I collaborated with a team of interior designers, IT infrastructure specialists, construction professionals, signage designers, and lighting designers to ensure the design was both feasible and innovative. The involvement of signage designers helped integrate Orico's branding seamlessly throughout the facility, while lighting designers played a crucial role in creating ambient and functional lighting that complements the architectural features and enhances the usability of each space. This interdisciplinary approach was key to achieving a holistic and effective design.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
NM: Technology is integral to my design, facilitating flexible and dynamic training environments through state-of-the-art IT solutions.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
NM: The design was heavily influenced by data from employee feedback and space utilization studies, which helped tailor the space to actual user needs and preferences.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
NM: Some of the main challenges included integrating modern technology into an older building and designing versatile spaces that could adapt to both current and future training needs.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
NM: I decided to submit this design to an international design competition to showcase how architectural innovation can effectively embody and enhance corporate identity and functionality.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
NM: Through this project, I learned the importance of deeply understanding client needs and the impact of a well-thought-out design on user engagement and satisfaction.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
NM: Additionally, this project exemplifies how thoughtful design can contribute to a company’s ethos and employee morale, which are critical components of corporate success in the modern era.
