Interview with Xiong Zhang at Wednesday 15th of May 2024 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? XZ: The main principle behind our design is to integrate elements of Chinese tradition with modern environmental consciousness, creating a unique sensory experience. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? XZ: Our main focus in designing this work was to achieve a harmonious blend of Chinese cultural aesthetics and eco-friendly materials, aiming to create a product that resonates with both traditional and contemporary sensibilities. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? XZ: Our future plans for this award-winning design involve further promotion of its eco-friendly features and expansion into new markets, while maintaining its commitment to sustainability. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? XZ: It took us several months to design this particular concept, as we needed to carefully research and experiment with various materials and production techniques to achieve our desired aesthetic and environmental goals. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? XZ: We designed this concept out of a desire to fuse traditional Chinese culture with modern environmental awareness. While the initial inspiration was intrinsic, we also recognized the growing demand for sustainable products in the market. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? XZ: Currently, we plan to produce this design ourselves, ensuring quality control and adherence to our environmental principles. However, we are open to collaborations with other companies that share our values. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? XZ: We designed this particular type of work to address the increasing consumer interest in eco-friendly products, while also celebrating the rich heritage of Chinese culture. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? XZ: While our design was primarily influenced by traditional Chinese art and environmental concerns, we also drew inspiration from contemporary eco-conscious designers who have paved the way for sustainable innovations. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? XZ: The target customer for this design is individuals who appreciate both the aesthetic beauty of Chinese culture and the importance of sustainable living practices. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? XZ: What sets this design apart from other similar concepts is its innovative use of natural materials, such as the natural pebbles from the local river, and its commitment to eco-friendly packaging and production processes, which create a truly unique and environmentally-conscious product experience. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? XZ: The name "Meditation of the Lotus," or "悦己" in Chinese, was chosen to evoke a sense of tranquility and self-appreciation. The lotus flower holds deep symbolic meaning in Chinese culture, representing purity, enlightenment, and rebirth, which aligns with the calming and reflective experience we aim to provide with our fragrance. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? XZ: The most unique aspect of our design is perhaps the innovative use of natural materials, particularly the incorporation of Jialing River natural pebbles as the fragrance carrier. This not only provides a distinctive sensory experience but also underscores our commitment to sustainability and eco-consciousness. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? XZ: Technology plays a crucial role in various aspects of this design, from the digital modeling and prototyping phase to the production process. Additionally, we leveraged technology to research and select eco-friendly materials and to optimize our packaging design for minimal environmental impact. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? XZ: Our design was indeed influenced by data and analytical research, particularly in the selection of materials and the optimization of our production processes. We conducted extensive research into the environmental footprint of different materials and manufacturing techniques to minimize waste and energy consumption. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? XZ: Some of the challenges we faced during the design and realization of our concept included sourcing sustainable materials that met our aesthetic and functional requirements, as well as optimizing our production processes to ensure efficiency and minimize environmental impact. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? XZ: We decided to submit our design to an international design competition as a way to gain recognition and exposure on a global scale, and to showcase our innovative approach to sustainable design to a wider audience of industry professionals and consumers. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? XZ: Through the designing of this work, we learned the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and the value of integrating environmental considerations into every stage of the design process. We also gained valuable insights into sustainable material sourcing and production practices, which have informed our future design endeavors. FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions? XZ: One aspect we'd like to highlight is the importance of consumer education and awareness in driving demand for sustainable products. As designers, we believe it's essential to not only create environmentally-friendly products but also to communicate their benefits and inspire positive change in consumer behavior.
