Interview with Yinghua Lu at Monday 8th of July 2024 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? YL: The main inspiration behind my design is to merge outdoor functionality with hypebeast style, aiming to create innovative footwear that balances aesthetics with practicality. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? YL: My focus was on achieving a design that offers customizable fit options for different feet, integrates speed dry materials, and incorporates ergonomic principles for enhanced comfort and performance. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? YL: For this award-winning design, I plan to explore further customization options, potentially expanding into collaborations that can bring new elements to the concept. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? YL: It took approximately six months to develop and refine this concept, from initial ideation to prototyping. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? YL: This design stemmed from my personal inspiration rather than being commissioned, driven by a desire to push boundaries in footwear design. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? YL: Currently, I am exploring options to produce this design myself, open to partnerships or licensing agreements to bring it to market. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? YL: I designed this work to innovate within the footwear industry, addressing gaps in the market for stylish yet functional outdoor footwear. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? YL: While I drew from various sources, this design was primarily influenced by my background in product design and my observations of emerging trends in both fashion and outdoor gear. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? YL: The target customer includes urban explorers and trend-conscious individuals who value both style and functionality in their footwear choices. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? YL: What sets this design apart is its integration of safety belt-inspired elements for foot lockdown, along with its focus on ergonomic design principles tailored for active lifestyles. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? YL: The name "HYPEX" reflects its fusion of hypebeast aesthetics with extreme sports functionality, symbolizing its bold and innovative approach. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? YL: I utilized Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign), Rhino for 3D modeling, and Blender for prototyping during this project. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? YL: The most unique aspect is its integration of customizable fit options and speed dry materials, enhancing user comfort and performance. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? YL: I would look into technical experts in material science and biomechanics to ensure the design's feasibility and functionality. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? YL: Technology played a crucial role in refining the design, particularly in quick prototyping. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? YL: I looked into ergonomic design features, fashion trends, ensuring the design met both aesthetic and functional criteria. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? YL: Challenges included balancing aesthetic appeal with technical feasibility, as well as refining ergonomic details to enhance user comfort and performance. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? YL: I submitted this design to showcase its innovative approach and potential impact on the footwear industry on an international platform. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? YL: Designing this work challenged me to refine my technical skills, deepen my understanding of market trends. It also spark me to consider different target users. FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions? YL: This design represents my commitment to pushing the boundaries of traditional footwear design, merging fashion-forward aesthetics with cutting-edge functionality to create impactful products for modern consumers.
