Interview with Maciej Kasprzak at Thursday 2nd of May 2024

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
MK: The inspiration behind my design was the topic dancing and the way artists showed these inseparable part of any culture in their works. Because people go to museums less and less I wanted to bring the idea of these expressive ritual into their life by designing an everyday jewelry. Instead of playing with colors I payed around with the form. The light reflections should make an illusion of constant movement.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
MK: I wanted to design a simple piece of jewelry that many people can afford. The segments can be easily replaced or added. It is also possible to combine silver and gold (plated) links. The focus was on creating a meaningful jewelry which can be used for example as a reminder of priorities set in life.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
MK: I would ideally like to bring it onto the market under my name. But I am also aware that it is not easy to build a brand while studying. That's why I'm open to collaborations or offers.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
MK: It took quite a long time. I designed it when I had more time and hadn't do anything for my studies or work.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
MK: I was learning 3d modeling and around the same time my lecturer showed us dancing in different paintings. I can remember that the work of Henri Matisse looked already to me like a bracelet. I wanted to try if I can model a bracelet to this topic and that was it.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
MK: I plan to sell or lease the production rights. If I don't get a good offer I am considering producing and selling it under my brand.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
MK: I started with designing jewelry, because it is cost-effective, the material gives unlimited possibilities and this type of work is very beginner friendly for all who haven't got experience in design.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
MK: No.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
MK: The target customer are men and women who

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
MK: My design hasn't got a standard closure mechanism and the form of links is quite unique. I see my design as a small, wearable sculpture.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
MK: I was inspired by old paintings which showed dancing people and the movement. "Dance" as a request calls to action. It goes with the message of the bracelet very well.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
MK: I used a pen, paper, Pc with Blender and a 3d printer.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
MK: The form of each link, the closure and the possibility of adding or reducing links.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
MK: I did not collaborate with anyone for this design.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
MK: With the 3d printing technology it is possible to produce complex jewelry pieces.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
MK: My design isn't influenced by data or analytical research.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
MK: The biggest challenge was to find good settings and material properties for the rendering.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
MK: I wanted to show how good are my designs.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
MK: I learned how to set lighting for good jewelry renderings.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
