Interview with Serra Ozbay at Monday 27th of May 2024

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
SO: The main principle behind our design is to honor the rich historical and geographical context of Dalyan, particularly the ancient Lykian tombs dating back to the 4th century BCE, which are visible from every angle of the property. Before embarking on the project, we conducted thorough research into the region's history, which served as a wellspring of inspiration. The project owners, deeply rooted in the local community, shared fascinating insights about the area's heritage, further fueling our enthusiasm. We were determined to weave these historical narratives into every aspect of the design. Our vision was to create a space where every element tells a story, where the expertise of local artisans takes center stage. Each piece of furniture and decor not only adds aesthetic value but also serves as a tangible link to the past, offering glimpses into the lives of those who have called this region home throughout the centuries. In essence, this house stands as a testament to the artistry and craftsmanship of the artisans, whose labor is palpable in every meticulously crafted detail. It's more than just a dwelling; it's a living homage to Dalyan's rich cultural tapestry.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
SO: Our main focus in designing this project has been to craft a space that fosters intimacy and warmth for the occupants, a home where the couple and their two daughters can create lasting memories together. We wanted to achieve a seamless blend of comfort and style, where every corner exudes a sense of belonging. Taking into account the unique geographical features of Dalyan, we sought to infuse the interior with colors and elements that evoke a feeling of being embraced by nature. The goal was to create an environment that not only reflects the beauty of the surrounding landscape but also envelops the family in a cocoon of tranquility. While Dalyan is traditionally known as a summer destination, we recognized the project owners' aspiration to transition from city life and make this their permanent residence in the future. With this in mind, we meticulously prepared the infrastructure to ensure that the house is equipped for year-round living, offering comfort and convenience in all four seasons. Ultimately, our aim was to design a haven where the family can escape the everyday hustle, forging connections with each other and with nature, whether they're unwinding during the summer months or embracing the quiet beauty of Dalyan's winters.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
SO: Our future plans for the award-winning Dalyan summer house design are are quite exciting. Firstly, we are eager to showcase this design to a broader audience, sharing its principles of minimalism and sustainability with enthusiasts around the globe. By doing so, we aim to inspire others to embrace a more mindful approach to living spaces. Expanding upon the success of this project, we envision adapting the design to suit diverse geographical regions and climate conditions, while maintaining the essence of its original charm. Through careful modifications and thoughtful adjustments, we aim to make this design accessible and applicable to a wide range of environments, ensuring its versatility and longevity. Furthermore, we are committed to continued research and innovation in the field of sustainable architecture and interior design. By staying at the forefront of trends and technologies, we strive to further elevate our designs, pushing the boundaries of what's possible while remaining true to our core values of elegance, functionality, and environmental stewardship.

SO: We designed this particular concept in response to a commission from the clients, a couple who envisioned a year-round home where they could reside with their two daughters.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
SO: Currently, we're considering various options regarding the production and distribution of our design. We're open to exploring partnerships with companies interested in bringing this concept to fruition. Whether it's through licensing the production rights or collaborating with manufacturers, our goal is to make this design accessible to those who appreciate its unique blend of functionality, aesthetics, and cultural resonance.
