Interview with Danilo Villanueva & Makina & Co at Tuesday 28th of May 2024

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
DV: To push the three-handed rectangular watch category with the limited production and budgetary resources available to us.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
DV: We wanted to design the black sheep in the three-handed rectangular watch category.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
DV: To keep this design as a one off. It will be sold out in one month or so. After that, Andras will very much likely return but not exactly the same way as its original iteration.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
DV: 1 year from concept to finished prototype

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
DV: This design is purely Makina's.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
DV: The intent was to produce and sell under Makina Watches

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
DV: We did not have a rectangular watch in our product portfolio, hence the steps taken to design Andras for Makina.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
DV: No

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
DV: Watch enthusiasts and those who have an eccentric taste for watch collecting.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
DV: Its multifaceted design from case to dial.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
DV: Makina Watches' naming convention for its models is based on names of angels and demons. Although Andras is a demon name, the design is unrelated to its name like all of Makina's models.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
DV: Illustrator, Photoshop, Autocad, Fusion 360

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
DV: The multifaceted case design PVD coated in intense black.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
DV: We worked with our own engineers to realize this design.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
DV: Honestly, if Makina's main goals were to follow trends and to sell as many watches to our target as much as possible, then we would have conducted extensive research. But that is not Makina's goals at all. Our goal is simply to put out there the best looking timepieces we possibly can with our very limited resources and attract likeminded watch collectors.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
DV: The balance between conventional and unconventional thinking. The challenge is pushing the category to a place where it would not put off watch purists who are generally traditionalists.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
DV: This is the most contemporary design to come out of Makina Watches. It has the attributes that make it appealing for a lot of industrial designers and jury members. We decided to make this model our first entry to award organizations for reasons mentioned.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
DV: Like mentioned before, this is something unique to come out of the brand. What we've learned is that Andras is the beginning of a new chapter for Makina. All our models would have to live up to this new standard achieved with this model and nothing less.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
