FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
YT: My main principle was to address the rapid disappearance of urban fringe agricultural environments and the worsening ecological and natural conditions. I aimed to create a garden where people can live healthily and coexist with nature. The inspiration came from the fairy tale "The Wizard of Oz.
FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
YT: My main focus was on improving the challenges posed by strong northeast winter winds and local water scarcity. Through micro-environmental wind control experiments, I aimed to enhance the layout of plantings and activity areas.
FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
YT: I plan to apply these effective methods to improve other harsh environments.
FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
YT: It took me 3 years to complete this design concept.
FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
YT: This design was commissioned. I aimed to address local environmental challenges through this unique concept.
FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
YT: A professional construction team is collaborating on the execution.
FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
YT: I was inspired by the support from the project's stakeholders.
FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
YT: The Low Impact Development (LID) methods and technologies internationally had a significant impact on my design.
FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
YT: The target clients for this design are the residents of the newly developed community on Dabelly Mountain in Taichung City, Taiwan, including over 200 households.
FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
YT: I wanted the name to reflect the beauty of the rural wilderness of Dabelly Mountain.
FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
YT: We used AutoCAD, SketchUp, and 3D tools for design and visual presentation.
FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
YT: I incorporated environmental wind simulation experiments into my design.
FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
YT: We collaborated with the Millet Design team, all of whom are professionals with extensive expertise in landscape architecture.
FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
YT: Technology serves to assist, strengthen, and experimentally validate this design.
FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
YT: Yes, I conducted wind control experiments and other research to support the decision-making process for this design.
FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
YT: I faced numerous challenges due to the variability in climatic conditions.
FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
YT: I decided to do so because the stakeholders affirmed and supported my design.
FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
YT: I learned to approach global environments with humility and to conduct design in a more subdued manner.
FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
YT: I continue to monitor the recovery status of the ecology.
