Home > Winners > Design #148643 >Interview
Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Jung-Mei Wou (JW) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Jung-Mei Wou by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Soar here.

Interview with Jung-Mei Wou at Monday 30th of October 2023

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
JW: The inspiration behind "Soar" is the concept of a healing soul's Garden of Eden within everyone's heart. It aims to evoke the code of freedom in the human spirit by depicting the instantaneous soaring of a bird, the sense of speed in flight, and constant change.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
JW: The main focus was to recreate the dynamic form of flying birds, the sense of speed, and the constantly changing nature of flight, challenging the lightness and graceful curvature of metal sculpture.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
JW: Future plans for this design might involve further exhibitions and potentially offering it for purchase or display.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
JW: The prototype was exhibited in 2016, but the large-scale sculpture was finished in 2022, so it took several years for the concept to be realized.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
JW: This design was not commissioned; it was a pursuit of artistic inspiration rooted in the symbolism of freedom and the healing qualities of a garden.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
JW: The design is not being mass-produced but could be made available for exhibition and art installations or available for purchase.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
JW: The design aimed to convey the sensory experience of a garden, capturing the soaring of birds and the concept of freedom.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
JW: The design draws its primary inspiration from nature and is an original creation by the artist.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
JW: The target customers would likely be art collectors, galleries, or art enthusiasts.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
JW: What sets this design apart is its focus on the sensory experience of flight and freedom, challenging traditional metal sculpture conventions.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
JW: The name "Soar" reflects the instantaneous soaring depicted in the sculpture, symbolizing freedom and the healing power of a garden.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
JW: Design tools may have included 3D modeling software for visualization and possibly aerodynamic analysis tools.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
JW: The most unique aspect of this design is its challenging portrayal of flight dynamics and lightness in metal sculpture.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
JW: This artwork is an original design created by me. It involved collaboration with skilled metal craftsmen for the construction of the large sculpture.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
JW: Technology plays a role in the design by potentially using aerodynamic shape optimization to achieve the desired aesthetics while considering wind load.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
JW: The design may have been influenced by aerodynamic research and shape optimization to reduce wind load.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
JW: The main challenge was achieving the appearance of floating lightness in the sculpture while dealing with shifted centers of gravity and maintaining structural balance.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
JW: The decision to submit to an international design competition aimed to gain recognition and exposure for the artwork.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
JW: The design process involved gaining a deeper understanding of structural mechanics and artistic expression.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
JW: Art and design have the power to inspire, connect, and heal the human spirit. It's a privilege to be able to create pieces that can evoke emotions, provoke thoughts, and provide solace.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
