Interview with Fabrizio Constanza at Thursday 2nd of January 2025

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
FC: The design draws inspiration from gameboards and video games. Gameboards represent an elegant expression of mathematical concepts, allowing people to experience strategy and logic in a simple, relaxing way. Historically, they have served as a source of tranquility and intellectual engagement for great minds. This desk channels the same elegance and sense of calm into a functional design.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
FC: The design draws inspiration from gameboards and video games. Gameboards represent an elegant expression of mathematical concepts, allowing people to experience strategy and logic in a simple, relaxing way. Historically, they have served as a source of tranquility and intellectual engagement for great minds. This desk channels the same elegance and sense of calm into a functional design.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
FC: As a custom-made furniture piece, its future lies in bringing joy and utility to the commissioner. The client frequently expresses how much they appreciate the design, which is the ultimate validation of its success. Each time my work resonates deeply with a client, I know the design has achieved its purpose.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
FC: Designing this desk was a journey. It began with understanding the client's emotional needs and defining the dimensions of the project. The conceptualization phase took about two weeks, followed by three weeks of production. Each stage involved careful collaboration and refinement.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
FC: This was a commissioned project. I was drawn to the concept because of its unique vision and the client's intention to blend functionality with emotional resonance. Their passion for the project made it an inspiring collaboration.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
FC: This piece was produced specifically for the client and has already been delivered. It remains a one-of-a-kind creation tailored to their unique needs.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
FC: The idea of designing a modern desk that doubles as a board game table was both challenging and exciting. I am particularly drawn to projects that go beyond function to achieve emotional transcendence, which is central to my design philosophy.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
FC: For this project, I primarily researched gameboard tables, but I found nothing similar that merged gaming, board gaming, and corporate functionality into a cohesive design. This encouraged me to explore a fresh perspective.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
FC: The target customer is someone who seeks a deeper connection with their environment—a person who values meaningful and emotionally resonant design.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
FC: This piece is a custom-made design tailored to specific spatial and functional requirements. Its 3-meter-long solid wood top, sourced from regional materials, offers a classic touch paired with a modern base and side finished in automotive paint. The fusion of tradition and innovation makes it truly unique.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
FC: Inspired by the magical and strategic elements of the gaming world, the name 5972 Olton evokes a sense of wonder magic and creativity. Naming my pieces is an essential part of my process, as it connects the design to its narrative.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
FC: I started with sketches, using pen and paper to quickly conceptualize the overall shape. Then, I worked with my team to create digital renders, which allowed us to refine materials, colors, and details collaboratively.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
FC: The design captures and translates the client’s emotional needs into a tangible form. This emotional connection guided every aspect of the design process.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
FC: My team includes specialists in 3D imaging, blueprint drafting, and skilled artisans in carpentry and woodworking, chapgpt. Their expertise was vital in bringing this concept to life.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
FC: Technology played a vital role in the realization of this project. The ability to create 3D renderings and scenes allowed me to visualize the desk with precision, ensuring every detail aligned with the client’s vision. These tools facilitated in-depth analysis of the project, helping to identify and address potential technical challenges before production began. Additionally, working with ChatGPT provided invaluable support in articulating my design philosophy and communication.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
FC: Research was a key element. I explored existing gameboard tables and studied woodworking innovations to inform my approach, ensuring the design met both functional and aesthetic standards.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
FC: Balancing functionality and aesthetics was challenging, particularly when designing the desk’s side compartments. Ensuring that drawers and a CPU storage unit fit seamlessly required precision and meticulous planning.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
FC: The uniqueness of this project and its thoughtful vision made it an ideal candidate to share with the global design community.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
FC: This project reminded me of the importance of designing emotionally resonant pieces. It brought me back to my roots, creating designs that are deeply personal and meaningful.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
FC: enjoy

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
