FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
YC: The driving force behind the design of the PlantC mobile app is to bridge the gap between people's passion for houseplants and their limited knowledge or time to care for them. Our main objective is to create an interface that offers easily understandable, personalized, and accessible information about plant care. I was inspired by witnessing the challenges faced by many plant owners who, despite their admiration for the beauty and serenity plants bring, often struggle to meet their green companions' needs. This inspiration gave birth to PlantC, a harmonious combination of aesthetics, user-centric design, and practicality. I envisioned PlantC as a companion that simplifies plant care, fostering a stronger bond between individuals and their leafy friends.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
YC: The core objective of my design for PlantC was to blend simplicity and functionality seamlessly. I aimed to create a clean and intuitive interface that transforms plant care from a chore into an enjoyable experience. The design was meticulously crafted to provide users with intuitive guidance, ensuring that every visual element serves a purpose. The minimalist green and white color scheme, specifically chosen, enhances the app's emphasis on plant care while creating a refreshing and uplifting atmosphere. With this design approach, my goal was to cultivate an app that not only appeals to plant lovers but also motivates them to regularly engage with their beloved plants.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
YC: In shaping the future of PlantC, my vision revolves around continuous growth and evolution, mirroring the ever-changing nature of the plants it nurtures. Winning this award has strengthened my confidence in the app's potential, yet I recognize the importance of ongoing improvement. To achieve this, I intend to incorporate user testing and iterative design processes, actively seeking and incorporating user feedback to refine the user experience and introduce new features. Additionally, I envision the introduction of social elements, such as plant care communities, where users can connect, share their experiences, and offer advice. YC: The design of PlantC was guided by the fundamental principles of human-centered design and design thinking, which are widely endorsed by designers, including Don Norman, co-founder of the Nielsen Norman Group. The primary objective was to create an intuitive and user-friendly interface that prioritizes the needs and experiences of the users. In terms of aesthetic inspiration, the clean and minimalist design language observed in contemporary digital products played a role in shaping PlantC's visual identity. Furthermore, nature itself served as a profound source of inspiration—the colors, tranquility, and organic forms found in the natural world. It is important to emphasize, however, that while these influences provided guidance, the design of PlantC is distinct and tailored to the specific requirements of houseplant enthusiasts.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
YC: The target customer base for PlantC consists of modern individuals who value the aesthetic and health benefits that houseplants bring but may lack the necessary knowledge or time to care for them effectively. These individuals are keen on nurturing a personal connection with their green companions, despite their hectic schedules. They encompass a wide range of people, from young adults who have recently acquired their first succulent to professionals who have adorned their office spaces with a diverse array of plants. However, they all encounter a shared challenge: understanding the unique requirements of their plants and ensuring their care amidst the busyness of everyday life. PlantC is specifically designed to assist this diverse spectrum of plant enthusiasts, offering personalized reminders and plant identification features to support their plant care journey.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
YC: What distinguishes PlantC from other similar designs is its distinct emphasis on casual plant owners and its unwavering commitment to a user-centric approach. While many plant care apps target experienced gardeners or offer generic plant care guidance, PlantC stands out by meticulously catering to the needs of individuals who perceive plants as serene and visually appealing additions to their living or working spaces. The user interface has been thoughtfully crafted to be clean and invigorating, exuding a sense of lightness that aligns with the app's promise of a leisurely experience. Additionally, the incorporation of features such as plant identification and personalized plant profiles amplifies PlantC's uniqueness in the market, further enhancing its value to users.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
YC: The selection of the name "PlantC" was a thoughtful process aimed at capturing the essence of the app's mission. The name stands for "Plant Care," succinctly conveying the app's primary purpose in a clear and impactful manner. It is straightforward, memorable, and directly resonates with the target user group. The letter 'C' in the name could also symbolize 'Connect,' emphasizing the app's goal of fostering a meaningful connection between individuals and their beloved plant companions. This choice highlights the app's role in cultivating a deeper understanding and appreciation for plants, further emphasizing the significance of their care and well-being.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
YC: During the process of developing PlantC, I utilized a range of design tools to transform the concept into a tangible reality. Google Drive played a pivotal role, serving as a central repository for documenting each stage of the design process. To gather valuable insights into user needs and preferences, I relied on Google Forms to conduct surveys. The synergy of these design tools ultimately culminated in the development of the PlantC prototype.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
YC: What sets PlantC apart from others is its exceptional fusion of simplicity, functionality, and user-centric design. It goes beyond being a mere tool and becomes a trusted companion that caters to the specific needs of each user. PlantC's remarkable capability to identify plants and deliver personalized care instructions based on individual plant profiles is a standout feature. The notification system, which prompts users when their plants require attention, is another distinctive element designed to prevent plant care from being overlooked. This seamless integration of intuitive design and practical functionality, all tailored to the user's needs, distinguishes PlantC in the realm of design.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
YC: While the core concept and design of PlantC were primarily developed individually, the journey undoubtedly involved indirect collaboration with various individuals who generously contributed their expertise and insights. For instance, the participants in the surveys and interviews played a vital role in shaping the design by sharing their diverse experiences and preferences. Their input helped validate the necessity for such an application and influenced the choices made in UI/UX design. Although direct collaboration with individuals possessing technical or specialized skills was not prominent in the initial stages, it is acknowledged that moving forward, the actual development of the app would necessitate collaboration with software developers, app programmers, and potentially even botanists to ensure the accuracy of plant-related information.
