Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Grégoire Gurtner (GG) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Grégoire Gurtner by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Wall O here.

Interview with Grégoire Gurtner at Tuesday 20th of June 2023

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
GG: I wanted to create a relaxation area, a wall cocoon for small moments of detachment.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
GG: I have always sought sobriety in this object. An aggressive, angular or loaded design, does not allow you to relax.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
GG: I want to make it evolve, so that it can respond to different atmospheres. But its basic concept must be preserved.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
GG: From the first idea, to the realization of the first marketable model, it took about two years.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
GG: I simply followed an inspiration. I find these to be the most difficult objects to create, because there are no constraints, so no guide lines.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
GG: The product is currently manufactured by a partner, and marketed by my own company. However, a partnership on production rights is not excluded.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
GG: I am a very stubborn person. Once an idea gets into my mind, you have to work hard to get it out of it. And as this idea still seemed original to me, I really wanted to continue.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
GG: The whole stage of the project was done very autonomously. I find it difficult to integrate people into the creative stages, because the divergent opinions, the tastes are not the same and you have to keep the very essence of your own creation. But afterwards, I gladly receive advice, such as on this design, for technical design or material proposals.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
GG: Perhaps as the main target, public spaces, which need to offer small parenthesis to passers-by. But also banking institutions, museums and others, in which we seek above all calm and privacy

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
GG: The curiosity it arouses, as if suspended in time

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
GG: Simply by the alliance of its location and design

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
GG: The basics, drawing and models

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
GG: After the creation phase, Ja'i calls on a company specializing in custom furniture for technical design. They are now the ones who manufacture it.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
GG: There is not much technology in this design. The technologies can be used during its manufacture, but in a relatively basic way. Simple object, simple use.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
GG: Its location, free on a wall or on a blank surface, required research to ensure its safety. Its envelope being made of flexible material, it was not necessary to rely on it for the structure

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
GG: Thanks to one of my former teachers, who always told me, if you create, be proud and show what you are capable of, do not keep it to yourself.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
GG: I learned so much. In so many areas: perseverance, patience, doubt, eliminating doubt. Each creation is formative, each project, each meeting...

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
