Interview with Fatima Dahmani at Sunday 25th of June 2023 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? FD: The main principle behind the Taj Bracelet design is to capture the opulence and beauty of Indian aesthetics. Drawing inspiration from floral patterns and pendants found in Indian jewelry, the design incorporates an Islamic geometric pattern as its foundation. The idea is to create an intricate three-dimensional lacework that exudes airiness and elegance, symbolizing a fusion of cultural heritage and artistic innovation. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? FD: My main focus in designing the Taj Bracelet was to challenge traditional codes of oriental jewelry and explore new possibilities in aesthetics and inspiration. I wanted to redefine Oriental jewelry by combining technical innovation with artistic expression. The goal was to create captivating and timeless patterns that resonate with modern sensibilities while honoring the rich cultural history they draw upon. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? FD: With the recognition and honor of winning the A'Design Award, my future plans for the Taj Bracelet are to continue sharing its beauty and significance with a wider audience. I aim to collaborate with esteemed jewelry retailers and galleries to showcase this design in exhibitions and events that celebrate artistry and craftsmanship. Additionally, I plan to explore the possibility of expanding the Taj collection by incorporating stones and pearls in other jewelry pieces that complement the bracelet's intricate lacework. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? FD: The process of designing the Taj Bracelet took several months to complete. From the initial ideation phase to the refinement of intricate details, it required careful attention to every aspect of the design. Ensuring that the lacework, floral motifs, and overall structure harmonized perfectly demanded meticulous effort and artistic exploration. The time invested was necessary to bring forth a design that embodies the essence of the Taj collection. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? FD: The design of the Taj Bracelet emerged from my passion for blending cultural heritage with innovative design. It was not commissioned but rather born out of a personal desire to create jewelry that transcends traditional boundaries and speaks to the universal allure of beauty. Drawing inspiration from Indian aesthetics and Islamic geometric art, I embarked on this creative journey to express my artistic vision and share it with the world. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? FD: The allure of Indian aesthetics and the intricate beauty of floral patterns and pendants in Indian jewelry captivated my imagination. The desire to reinterpret Oriental jewelry with a contemporary twist and explore the possibilities of combining traditional craftsmanship with modern design technologies fueled my passion for creating the Taj Bracelet. It was a natural progression of my artistic journey to delve into the realm of jewelry design and express my vision through this exquisite piece. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? FD: The Taj Bracelet is designed for women who appreciate the fusion of cultural heritage and contemporary design. It appeals to individuals who seek unique and captivating jewelry pieces that transcend fleeting trends. The target customer appreciates the intricacy of craftsmanship and values the emotional connection that jewelry can evoke. They are confident, bold, and embrace their individuality, using jewelry as a form of self-expression. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? FD: What sets the Taj Bracelet apart is its innovative reinterpretation of Oriental jewelry. By combining traditional aesthetics with modern design techniques, it achieves a harmonious balance between cultural heritage and contemporary elegance. The intricate 3D lacework, inspired by Islamic geometric patterns, creates an ethereal and timeless allure that captivates the eye. The attention to detail, quality craftsmanship, and the ability to customize the bracelet further differentiate it from other designs. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? FD: The name "Taj" was chosen to encapsulate the essence of the design and evoke a sense of grandeur and elegance. "Taj" refers to the crown-like structures often seen in Indian architecture, symbolizing beauty and splendor. By associating the bracelet with the name Taj, I aimed to highlight its regal and majestic qualities, while also paying homage to the rich cultural heritage that inspired its creation. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? FD: Throughout the design process of the Taj Bracelet, I employed a combination of traditional jewelry design techniques and modern digital tools. Initially, I used sketching and hand-drawn illustrations to visualize the concept. Subsequently, I utilized jewelry design software to refine the intricate lacework and create a 3D model of the bracelet. This digital representation allowed for precision in detailing and served as a blueprint for the final production. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? FD: The most unique aspect of the Taj Bracelet is its intricate 3D lacework, which seamlessly blends traditional craftsmanship with modern design techniques. The design incorporates an Islamic geometric pattern that unfurls into an ethereal and delicate lace with floral motifs. This fusion of cultural heritage and contemporary aesthetics creates a mesmerizing visual experience and sets the bracelet apart as a truly distinctive piece of jewelry. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? FD: Design Interview (continued) Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? The design of the Taj Bracelet draws inspiration from the rich cultural history of Indian aesthetics and Islamic geometric art. While data and analytical research were not directly involved in the design process, extensive exploration and study of traditional jewelry forms, architectural motifs, and cultural symbolism informed the conceptualization of the design. By immersing myself in the beauty and intricacy of these art forms, I aimed to create a design that resonates with the heritage it draws upon while offering a contemporary and innovative interpretation. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? FD: Designing and realizing the Taj Bracelet presented several challenges. One of the main challenges was pushing the boundaries of traditional jewelry design to achieve the intricate 3D lacework. Ensuring the structural integrity and wearability of such delicate patterns required meticulous attention to detail and technical expertise.
