Interview with Eva Szumilas at Saturday 11th of June 2022 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? ES: The Gong cabinet is inspired by Far East culture. The Gong instrument is an attribute of wealth and serves as a status symbol. According to rites it brings fortune and strength. In the rituals of the Far East the Gong has retained its special significance to this day. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? ES: The main focus of this design was to create an interesting, memorable, timeless, intriguing piece. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? ES: The Gong cabinet is a part of the bigger furniture collection that I hope the award winning trophy will boost the awarenessabout my brand. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? ES: Actually the process of designing this particular piece was very fast. As usual the idea and the concept is the most important. I got the idea and within a week the whole idea was developed into a final look. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? ES: The Gong cabinet was commissioned by the client. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? ES: I sell and produce this cabinet and other of my furnituremyself. You can buy it directly from me or from a few international galleries. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? ES: The client was looking for some nice bar cabinets, which made me design one. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? ES: A personal interests in Far East cultures. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? ES: The target customers are art and design lovers, who are searching for unique, custom made, customizable design pieces. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? ES: A unique idea, attention to details and perfect finish. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? ES: The Gong cabinet is inspired by Far East culture, it looks like the gong instrument which is an attribute of wealth and serves as a status symbol. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? ES: Hand sketches, 3D programs. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? ES: A simple idea converted to an interesting, practical furniture. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? ES: I worked with professionals, skilled in craftsmanship. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? ES: to solve all technical issue, steadiness and durability of the piece. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? ES: A personal interests and research in Far East cultures. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? ES: Steadiness and durability of the piece, as well as sliding systems for the doors of the cabinet. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? ES: At this moment of my career I believe an international recognition is appreciated and it is a confirmation that I am on the right path.
