Interview with Anushka Contractor at Sunday 29th of December 2024

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
AC: The main principle behind "House of Solace" was to create a serene, functional living space that harmonizes with the vibrant yet chaotic environment of Mumbai. Inspired by timeless French aesthetics, we aimed to infuse classic elegance with modern sensibilities. The high ceilings and colonial architecture provided a canvas for a design that feels expansive and tranquil. The incorporation of natural light and open spaces enhances the sense of calm, making it a perfect retreat for a global Indian client.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
AC: My primary focus was to maximize functionality while maintaining aesthetic appeal in a compact space. The goal was to create a home that feels spacious and inviting, despite its modest size. Each area was designed to serve multiple purposes, reflecting the client’s lifestyle as a bachelor who works from home. Achieving a balance between elegance and practicality was crucial, ensuring that every element contributed to a cohesive and tranquil living environment.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
AC: I plan to showcase "House of Solace" at various design exhibitions and competitions to highlight its innovative use of space and sustainable design practices. Additionally, I aim to explore similar projects that focus on compact living, emphasizing eco-friendly materials and customization to meet individual client needs. This project has sparked a passion for creating urban sanctuaries, and I intend to continue pushing the boundaries of interior design in this realm.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
AC: The design process for "House of Solace" took approximately six months, from initial client consultations to completion. This included conceptualization, design development, and execution. The timeline was efficient, given the complexity of working within a compact space while ensuring high-quality craftsmanship and attention to detail.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
AC: This design was commissioned by a client who wanted to refresh his living space within a specific budget. The request allowed me the creative freedom to explore a timeless aesthetic while addressing the unique challenges of a compact home. The inspiration came from a desire to blend European elegance with the vibrant energy of Mumbai, creating a sanctuary that reflects the client’s global lifestyle.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
AC: Currently, "House of Solace" is a unique project tailored specifically for my client. While there are no immediate plans to produce or license the design on a larger scale, I am open to future collaborations that could adapt the principles of this design for similar compact living spaces.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
AC: The need for functional, beautiful living spaces in urban environments inspired this design. With the increasing trend of compact living, I wanted to demonstrate that elegance and functionality can coexist, providing a solution for individuals seeking both style and practicality in their homes.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
AC: The design was influenced by various sources, including the works of French designers known for their timeless elegance, as well as contemporary interior designers focusing on minimalism and functionality. The combination of these influences allowed for a unique interpretation that respects tradition while embracing modernity.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
AC: The target customer for "House of Solace" is a young professional or bachelor living in an urban environment who values aesthetics, functionality, and comfort. This demographic is often looking for stylish solutions that maximize living space without compromising on design.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
AC: What sets "House of Solace" apart is its seamless integration of distinct zones within a compact area, allowing for both open and intimate spaces. The use of customized elements and sustainable materials also adds a unique character that reflects the client’s personality and lifestyle, distinguishing it from cookie-cutter designs.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
AC: The name "House of Solace" reflects the tranquil and comforting atmosphere we aimed to create within the home. It signifies a retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life, embodying the idea that this compact space serves as a personal sanctuary for relaxation and rejuvenation.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
AC: I utilized a combination of design software such as AutoCAD and 3D Rhinoceros for drafting and 3D modeling. Additionally, mood boards and material samples were instrumental in visualizing the color palette and textures, ensuring a cohesive design vision.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
AC: The most unique aspect of "House of Solace" is the innovative use of space, particularly the open kitchen design that flows into the living area. This not only enhances the sense of spaciousness but also creates an inviting atmosphere for hosting guests. The custom features, like the mirror runner and bespoke furniture pieces, also add a distinctive character that tells a story.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
AC: I collaborated with skilled artisans and craftsmen to bring the custom furniture and design elements to life. Additionally, I worked closely with an architect to ensure the structural modifications were executed safely and effectively, particularly in removing the wall between the kitchen and living area.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
AC: Technology played a significant role in the design process, particularly in the use of software for visualization and planning. Smart home features were also considered to enhance convenience and efficiency, allowing the client to control lighting and appliances with ease.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
AC: Yes, the design was influenced by research on spatial efficiency and ergonomic principles, particularly in small living spaces. I analyzed trends in urban living and client preferences to ensure that the design not only met aesthetic goals but also catered to practical needs.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
AC: One of the main challenges was maximizing functionality within a limited square footage while maintaining a cohesive design. Balancing the client’s requirements with structural limitations required innovative solutions, such as multifunctional furniture and clever zoning.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
AC: The decision to submit "House of Solace" to an international design competition stemmed from a desire to showcase its innovative approach to compact living. I believe it represents the future of urban design, and sharing it on a global platform could inspire others in the field.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
AC: This project reinforced the importance of adaptability and creativity in design. I learned to approach challenges with an open mind, finding unique solutions that enhance both functionality and beauty. It also deepened my understanding of how to create personalized spaces that resonate with clients.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
AC: I would like to emphasize the importance of collaboration in the design process. Engaging with clients, artisans, and other designers enriches the creative journey and leads to more innovative outcomes. "House of Solace" is a testament to what can be achieved when vision meets collaboration, resulting in a space that truly feels like home.
