Interview with Shreya Paliwal at Wednesday 2nd of November 2022

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
SP: Visual Reflection of quality of product using unique form language which is also optimized for manufacturing and cost-effectiveness. Generally, the market segment is filled with products designed using plastics or thermoforming to achieve difficult curves and form language that feels appealing to the user and comfortable to the patient. We have challenged the market by creating a unique form factor using sheet metal thereby optimizing the cost for such a product with low volume production.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
SP: The main focus was to build a unique product that challenges the assumption "good curves and unique form language can only be achieved using processes like thermoforming, die casting, and so on". Using only sheet metal, a few bending, welding, and finishing processes Infinity has set itself apart in the market.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
SP: Refining it further to ensure best possible Navigational experience during the surgery while also enhancing the System of products for the Patients undergoing the surgery.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
SP: It took me around 6 months to fully understand and design this product including the process of Surgical Navigation system, it’s internal components, Customer needs, client requirements and the vision for this product.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
SP: The design was a requirement of our Client Happy Reliable Surgeries Pvt. Ltd in the Product range of easyNav™ for Elite and Global customer segment.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
SP: The Design is being Produced by Happy Reliable Surgeries Pvt. Ltd which now own all the production rights for the design.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
SP: I am an Industrial Designer by Profession. While in the final year of my academics, I had the opportunity of designing this product as my Final year Graduation Project.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
SP: I had mentors from the industry of design and our company Director that helped influence the design of my work.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
SP: Surgeons and allied health professionals catering to image guided navigational surgeries using systems provided by HRS Navigation Pvt. Ltd.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
SP: The unique combination of Form, Material, Manufacturing techniques and Price-point

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
SP: Infinity is supposed to be the best of all three versions of easyNav™ hence the name suggests that it is beyond just Aesthetic Elegance and Navigational accuracy.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
SP: CAD tools like Adobe XD, Adobe AI, Adobe PS, Solidworks, and rendering softwares.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
SP: Form

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
SP: I worked with application engineers, Clinical Business specialists, Product experts and managers and Quality head.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
SP: The technology ensures product is manufactured efficiently and with-in required budget.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
SP: For the product, Qualitative and quantitative research was conducted which was later analyzed to arrive at a brief for designing of this product.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
SP: Searching for low-volume Manufacturing capabilities were a challenge while also ensuring the design is aesthetic, lightweight and ships without damage.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
SP: The decision sprang forth from the desire to be acknowledged internationally.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
SP: I learned to detail the product for manufacturing since manufacturing is also a very integral part of the product.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
SP: Most of the things have been covered. Thank you.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
