Interview with Nobuhito Mori at Saturday 21st of May 2022 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? NM: We aim for problem-solving design. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? NM: The idea was to protect privacy while taking in light. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? NM: Nothing particularly. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? NM: It took 10 months from design to completion. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? NM: The decision to fulfil the functionality was made by trial and error, from the choice of material to the installation method. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? NM: We only plan to use it for buildings designed by us, as it needs to be considered in the context of the situation. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? NM: This was because the case was a narrow plot of land with difficulties in the living environment. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? NM: None in particular, as it is an original idea. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? NM: We don't know because we have not been affected by other influences. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? NM: This is the point at which the building is covered with the concept of a latticework, fulfilling the elements of lighting, ventilation and blindfolding. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? NM: This is because it covers the building like a skin further outside the building envelope. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? NM: After repeated trial and error with sketches and prototypes, they were made into CAD drawings. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? NM: We aim to create designs that have not yet existed in the world. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? NM: Samples were ordered from the material manufacturer and designed through trial and error with the firm's staff. The installation method was discussed on site with the construction company. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? NM: This is a translucent, weather-resistant material choice. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? NM: Samples of various materials and physical property data were collected and studied. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? NM: The challenge is the difficulty of the installation method. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? NM: This is the recruitment notice that came to the office. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? NM: We realised that we could create new values by considering architecture from the study of materials. FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions? NM: I would like to use this material as well as other materials to create new architecture in different parts of the world.
