Interview with Rui Ma at Monday 16th of May 2022 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? RM: The inspiration was from combining Chinese and English language culture. At the same time, I am also inspired by clean and modern visual designs, which brought me to think about how to create an alphabet that represents Hanzi in a modern way. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? RM: The possibility to combining Chinese characters and English alphabet. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? RM: To make this type design to an actual font. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? RM: I have been working on the concept for years, always thinking if there is an opportunity to create the design of these two languages. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? RM: An inspiration, the possibility of combining Asian and Western culture. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? RM: No FS: Who is the target customer for his design? RM: People who are interested in using typeface of combining Asian and Western culture. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? RM: Every letter was a custom design, this makes it unique. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? RM: It is pretty straightforward, the meaning of combining Chinese/Hanzi strokes and the English alphabet. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? RM: Adobe AI and Photoshop FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? RM: Every letter was a custom design, this makes it unique. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? RM: No FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? RM: By using the Adobe Creative Suite makes this concept become the actual design. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? RM: The research was based on information about Hanzi character strokes and the English alphabet from books and online. It helps form the idea from a draft to the final design. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? RM: The challenge of this project is how to combine the Hanzi stroke shapes and English letters in a clear and also creative way. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? RM: I believe it is worthy to be seen and known by more people. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? RM: I appreciate the aesthetic of designing Chinese/ Hanzi strokes and the English Alphabet. I would work on more designs like this in the future.
