Interview with Albert Potgieter at Tuesday 24th of May 2022

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
AP: The inspiration for this design was nature. I was on the family game farm in South Africa while designing this piece and the result was a piece that portrays movement and carries the feeling of wild Africa.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
AP: The initial idea was to make a design out of off cut pieces of wood. The idea was to decrease waste and re-use pieces that might have been thrown away.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
AP: I would love to see this art piece in homes, museums and public spaces.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
AP: About 3 months

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
AP: I decided to pursue an inspiration

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
AP: The production of this design is done by myself. All my work is handmade. The selling and marketing of this product is done by me or by galleries that represent me.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
AP: I designed this piece because of an inspiration

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
AP: No

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
AP: The Art lover. It is an functional art piece. Designed to be functional as a furniture piece but also on the other side be inspirational and change the atmosphere of your house.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
AP: It is built up out of different small pieces of hard wood. Every piece of wood can be seen individually, but together it creates a totally different look.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
AP: The name Optique is French for Optic, meaning vision. This design created the illusion of movement and I wanted to bring out that aspect of the design

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
AP: I only used paper and pencil for the design. I only designed a concept and then started to build and as the process went on made some changes a long the way. Designing, building, designing, building etc.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
AP: The visual aspect and that it is built up by a lot of little hardwood pieces.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
AP: No one. I designed and built it myself. Only running ideas through with my wife.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
AP: With this particular design I didn’t use so much technology. This piece was designed with paper and pencil, put together with glue and all handmade.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
AP: No this design was made purely on inspiration.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
AP: The challenges was to make sure all the pieces are put together in a way that is strong, so that it is functional. Also getting the right angles on the different pieces so that there is no gaps in between when glueing.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
AP: I wanted to take a chance and see what others out there think of it. Seeing how it holds up against other designs. Call it research if you will.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
AP: I learnt a lot of fine woodworking skills, also a lot of patience. I also learnt that making small changes can often great effect visually and structurally.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
AP: No this is great, thanks

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
