Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Chi-Hao Chiang (CC) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Chi-Hao Chiang by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Attache here.

Interview with Chi-Hao Chiang at Wednesday 8th of June 2022

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
CC: The main principle is to design a piece of furniture that's friendly for tenants. Thus ideally it should be flat-packed or foldable. Then I got inspiration from various folding furniture in the past about how to define the folding pivots.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
CC: I want to make it as small as possible when folded and have a proper seat height when unfolding. Thus, it can be user-friendly for both carrying and sitting.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
CC: I would like to research more to modify the design to make it more manufacturing efficient. Also, I believe the form factors can be more consistent.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
CC: This is a semester-long project. It's about 12 to 14 weeks.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
CC: I decided to pursue to challenge myself by designing a piece of folding furniture with my background in mechanical engineering.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
CC: Not yet. However, I would like to lease the rights if there is an opportunity.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
CC: I think it's because I realized I might be able to take the knowledge of mechanical engineering to solve the problem that tenants feel hassled when dealing with bulky furniture.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
CC: It would be my classmates who were in the same studio course. They did help a lot with inspiration while we were chatting casually.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
CC: It's the tenants who live in a relatively small places in big cities like New York.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
CC: I think it's the feature that how small it can be while folded and can also achieve a normal seat height while unfolding.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
CC: The inspiration came from a briefcase. That's what I want the users to feel while carrying it, as small as a briefcase.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
CC: I used rapid prototyping by using existing materials and fine-tune the mechanism with 3D printing. In the end, I used CNC to help make the final model.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
CC: I think it's the pivot design. The male and female can interlock with each other at a certain angle to provide strength to bear the users' weight.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
CC: I found a company that helped me produce metal 3D-printed pivot components for my final model. This was helpful as I couldn't afford the cost of molding.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
CC: I think it's CNC machining and metal 3D printing. These were both very helpful to finish the final model.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
CC: Unfortunately, it isn't for this particular project.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
CC: It was to find a way to bear enough weight but also stay simple in appearance. I did a lot of calculations to find the correct angles and dimensions.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
CC: I would like to see other professional designers' opinions about this design that I am satisfied with what I fulfilled.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
CC: I got more understanding about doing precise modeling in CAD software and operating a CNC machine. Also, I realized I can integrate my mechanical engineering background with design better

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
CC: No, thank you so much.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
