Interview with Jack Lim at Wednesday 25th of May 2022 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? JL: Interior design is the process of shaping the experience of interior space, through the manipulation of spatial volume as well as surface treatment. Not to be confused with interior decoration, interior design draws on aspects of environmental psychology, architecture, and product design in addition to traditional decoration. An interior designer is a person who is considered a professional in the field of interior design or one who designs interiors as part of their job. Interior design is a creative practice that analyses programmatic information, establishes a conceptual direction, refines the design direction, and produces graphic communication and construction documents. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? JL: The main focus in designing such project is pretty simple, keep everything simple and bold with element that suit for the area which’s supposed to. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? JL: Spread out to social media and share overall design and knowledge to the new blood in the Malaysia society. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? JL: It took me about one 1 month from scratch to completion. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? JL: The particular of concept came from contemporary with the combination of Zen and elegant elements. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? JL: The project is to produce as a part of our company’s shareholder for future renovation. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? JL: Passionate and self-inspiration of combining concept towards the others. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? JL: Yes, been working closely with one of my senior designers for all the enhancement. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? JL: One of our company’s shareholders. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? JL: It’s very subjective but the different or resembling concepts are firmly different as we workout our on way on every single detailing. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? JL: Every corner within this premise is bound to be comfortable as it is surrounded by flow elements such as curve surface to channeled out uneasy or deemed unpleasant sight of edgy surfaces. Only warm tone elements/materials are used to bring out the zen atmosphere which consists of light tone wood, raw marbles surfaces, matte color surfaces and so forth. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? JL: Free hand drawing, AutoCAD, Google SketchUp and 3DsMax Corona rendering. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? JL: A Little bold mixture with minimalist and elegant textures of marble to balance the spaces. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? JL: Collaboration with my senior designer with specialized in enhancement and strong 3D rendering skills. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? JL: Increased the realistic level of the rendering. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? JL: A feeling and mood associated in each particular place according to the area function. Setting up the tone in the house also helping to create focal points to highlight the furniture as well. Ambient light provided an overall illumination for all the space to create more practical and decorative lighting. Key material of using in the concept are timber textured material and stone. The combination of both materials are used to represent the zen atmosphere. With the advantage of natural lighting materials and calm colors are able to balance out with each element to create a neutral space. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? JL: The combination of contemporary style with Zen and elegant elements. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? JL: Always think positive, good design always comes with good judgement. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? JL: To retrieve the main reason of individual concepts of Contemporary, Zen, Minimalist and elegant elements. FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions? JL: That’s all for the moment
