Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Chris Slabber (CS) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Chris Slabber by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Eons here.

Interview with Chris Slabber at Wednesday 12th of February 2025

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
CS: The main focus of the series was to show texture is such a way to illustrate the millions of years of layers carved by nature. This is the reason for shooting in black and white. I felt that the color would distract from the main focus, which is the texture.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
CS: Just focusing on the texture in order to drive the narrative that we were not here first and will not be here till the end.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
CS: I would like to exhibit this series globally in order to share this magnificent piece of earth with the rest of the world.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
CS: It was a morning hike of about 20 kilometers. I would periodically stop and study the sandstone cliffs until I found an area to focus on. The post processing was done in photoshop where I extracted the textures by separating the highs, mid and shadows and manipulating them individually to achieve the right balance.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
CS: This was purely in the name of inspiration and there's no better source than nature itself.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
CS: Some of the images has been sold as exclusive images for company branding. I try to keep these images very exclusive so you will not find them on any stock site. This ensures that when using any of these images your brand will have the highest level of exclusivity.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
CS: Photography is fun, but you can stagnate doing the same thing. This was a personal challenge to try something different than my usual studio setups.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
CS: This was a one man endeavor, but I was influenced by studying black and white photography to get in the right mindset.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
CS: Anyone who enjoy's nature, but at the same time anyone who enjoy's abstract art/photography.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
CS: The fact that the majority of people would choose to shoot in color. I felt that by removing the element of color, this allows the viewer to focus solely on the texture and abstract nature of the images.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
CS: After speaking to an archeologist, I was inspired by the fact that these images were technically crafted over eons until I came past there and captured the shots. But then as soon as I was done, the erosion continued and the cliff will be ever changing.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
CS: Canon 5D sR and photoshop

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
CS: the abstract nature of nature.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
CS: This was a one men show.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
CS: To extract the necessary data in order to achieve the end look.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
CS: I just looked at black and white photography and focused on nature.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
CS: The hike was long and it was very hot outside.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
CS: I felt that I achieved something that can hold its own on an international level and that it was worth sharing with the world.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
CS: To get the gold you have to dig deep.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
CS: Just that we should try to admire the patients of nature, the silence and how it changes and adapts.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
