Interview with Lai Jiebin at Tuesday 4th of May 2021

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
LJ: Inspired by panda, panda has a beautiful meaning of peace and unity; Panda also symbolizes the harmony between man and nature. From a global point of view, the giant panda symbolizes China, which has a high representative significance, because the giant panda is China's national treasure. The image of panda head is designed in a simple and abstract way.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
LJ: I want to focus on personal feelings, highlight public participation and enhance the interactive relationship between people and sculpture

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
LJ: I want to find a place to land the sculpture

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
LJ: About a week

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
LJ: This design is a sudden inspiration when I see the panda by chance. I don't have any entrustment. I just want to create it myself

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
LJ: I intend to sell or lease its production rights

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
LJ: I want to pursue the combination of sculpture and public facilities to enhance the interaction between sculpture and the public

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
LJ: Although my inspiration comes from the panda, I created it in a minimalist way. The name "arc" can better reflect the concept of the work and guide people to think about the sculpture

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
LJ: 3dmax、Photoshop

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
LJ: Large but not congested, and with the function of public seats, the beautiful arc can add an interesting and beautiful feeling to the surrounding city

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
LJ: It was designed by myself

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
LJ: The function of public facilities and the choice of public space are studied

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
LJ: Looking for the most suitable space form for commercial square has the value-added value of public sculpture and the function of public facilities

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
LJ: yes

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
