Interview with Kristina Pacesaite at Sunday 29th of December 2024 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? KP: The main idea and inspiration was to demonstrate the natural beauty of each coffee producing country and one of the most beautiful creatures are the birds.In inspiration came from the old biology books and birdwatching guides, also modern photography. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? KP: I wanted to captivate delicate essence of the words while using the bold brown colour to make the design look good on a Kraft paper. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? KP: We are planing to extend the packaging line for the client. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? KP: approximately 1 month and the whole project took 2,5months. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? KP: The design was commissioned but he client who wanted new packaging for their coffee brand. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? KP: since it was a commissioned work, the client has all the rights. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? KP: My vision was based on moodboards of different graphic images and typography styles that helped to define the main design solutions. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? KP: not in this case, it was rather eclectic experience and more research based that influenced by someone. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? KP: The design was made to attract younger customers who value quality coffee and care about it's origin. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? KP: I thing the detailed illustrations stand out the most. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? KP: After we've decided to use bird illustrations it was obvious to call it "birds and coffee" FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? KP: Procreate for digital bird illustrations and Adobe Creative Suite for final result. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? KP: The project manifests the craftsmanship of coffee roasters FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? KP: I was working by myself on this project. It was a calming experience during the Covid. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? KP: The technical part of the process in crucial, because we wanted sharp looking images on a craft paper surface. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? KP: Visual research was started by investigating the other producer's offer in the same niche of coffee roasters in Lituanian market. My vision was based on moodboards of different graphic images and typography styles that helped to define the main design solutions. All The birds chosen for the packaging represent each country, are simple but at the same time elegant ant memorable. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? KP: The main challenge was to find the right postures of the birds and a balance of illustration style, that will be bold but still elegant. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? KP: I have found the colleagues work with the similar style who won the A design award and was inspired to do try it also. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? KP: for me every project is unique and has its own challenges, during the designing this work I had to improve my patience and illustration skills and try a bit different style. FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions? KP: I always remember that my old professor was right saying that the main inspiration we can get comes just from two places: ancient cultures and nature.
