Honghua Airport District Masterplan Mixed UseHonghua Airport District Masterplan Mixed UseHonghua Airport District Masterplan Mixed Use is an innovative urban renewal project that transforms an abandoned airport runway and its surrounding area into a vibrant mixed-use development, exemplifying contemporary architectural excellence in adaptive reuse design. The masterplan, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, encompasses a comprehensive 649m x 590m site bisected by a 62m-wide former runway, ingeniously repurposed as a central organizing element. The development seamlessly integrates diverse functions including performance spaces for indoor and outdoor entertainment, an LED sky screen retail arcade, international dining venues, waterways, courtyards, roof gardens, residential units, office complexes, retail facilities, hospitality establishments, and business parks. The design philosophy centers on the concept of Link, both physical and spiritual, creating meaningful connections throughout the space while respecting height restrictions of 35m for northern commercial parcels and 100m for southern residential areas, with a singular 150m office tower serving as a vertical landmark. The project employs sophisticated parametric design tools for massing studies, area calculations, and facade pattern control, incorporating materials such as wood, stone, metal, concrete, and steel, alongside thoughtful integration of natural elements and artistic installations. A distinctive linked activity bar along the runway park features a performance center as its anchor, while independent courtyards extend from the runway, complemented by stacked box massing that creates diverse facade designs. The development's innovative approach to urban space animation includes sunken plazas, LED-enhanced building skins, and interactive glass canopies, all designed to promote social interaction and community engagement while establishing a new cultural and commercial hub that honors the site's aviation heritage.
