Light Field Residence

Light Field Residence is an award-winning architectural renovation project that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of contemporary design principles with historical preservation. Located in Taiwan's Lingya District, this 115.703-square-meter two-story building with a mezzanine represents a masterful transformation of a 60-year-old traditional townhouse into a light-filled modern dwelling. The project, designed by Kai-Ling Huang, challenges conventional restoration approaches by injecting contemporary elements while preserving the soul of the original structure. The design philosophy centers on the innovative use of natural light and air circulation, achieved through the strategic removal of barriers and the implementation of transparent design elements. The residence features a sophisticated material palette including post-made clear water mold, hexagonal tiles, glass, and traditional Taiwanese close lightly pebble, which pays homage to the architectural heritage of 1950s-1970s Taiwan. The renovation maintains the building's original structural integrity while incorporating modern safety enhancements through steel reinforcement and waterproofing techniques. A notable design element is the dramatic black-backed staircase that serves as a vertical axis connecting all levels, complemented by carefully considered lighting that creates dynamic spatial narratives throughout the home. The project, which won an Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, demonstrates exceptional achievement in space optimization, natural light integration, and the preservation of architectural heritage while meeting contemporary living standards.
