Merchants International Cruise City Demonstration Area

Merchants International Cruise City Demonstration Area is an innovative architectural and landscape design project completed in 2019, encompassing 10,783 square meters in Zhanjiang City, Guangdong Province, China. This Gold A' Design Award-winning development masterfully integrates maritime themes with contemporary architectural elements, drawing inspiration from the South China Sea's natural environment and nautical motifs. The design philosophy centers on four key elements: the sea as foundation, river as body, boat as shape, and waves as pattern, creating a harmonious blend between macro and micro perspectives. The demonstration area features distinctive architectural elements including perforated aluminum plate corridors with wave-gray patterns that create an ethereal, futuristic atmosphere when illuminated at night. The project's sophisticated layout guides visitors through a carefully orchestrated sequence of spaces, beginning with an earth art entrance valley leading to a water-surrounded architectural sculpture, followed by shaded canyons and covered corridors that simulate a deck experience. The design incorporates innovative environmental considerations, including a microclimate system where water surfaces help regulate humidity and temperature, while the undulating terrain functions as a natural water management system. The project exemplifies sustainable urban development through its integration of local materials, community spaces, and regional cultural elements, while maintaining a strong focus on the spirit of maritime heritage. The demonstration area serves as a permanent installation that successfully bridges corporate identity with local cultural context, creating an immersive environment that celebrates the relationship between human design and natural elements.
