Peloponnese Rural Residential HousePeloponnese Rural Residential HousePeloponnese Rural Residential House is an exemplary architectural project situated in the remote village of Kalamia, Greece, that masterfully integrates contemporary sustainable design principles with traditional rural aesthetics. This residential structure, completed in 2019, demonstrates exceptional spatial innovation through its dual-facade approach, presenting a modest stone exterior from the street while revealing a dramatic two-level construction from the garden perspective. The 141-square-meter dwelling, positioned strategically on a 300-square-meter plot, maximizes outdoor living space while offering commanding views of the Gulf of Corinth. The design, which earned a Silver A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, draws inspiration from the industrial character of traditional Peloponnese stone stables, incorporating reclaimed local stone, grey roof tiles, and black aluminum facade window frames. The structure's materiality exemplifies sustainable practices through the use of locally-sourced materials and craftsmen within a 100-mile radius, featuring custom-made elements such as washed-wood handmade shutters, white-oil treated OSB, and dual-toned cement mortar. The interior spatial organization creates a harmonious flow between communal and private spaces, with the entrance level housing social areas that connect to an observation platform for stargazing, while the garden level accommodates bedrooms and a guest suite accessed through contemplative courtyards. The project's success lies in its ability to overcome significant challenges, including forest authority regulations and budget constraints, while maintaining high-quality architectural standards and providing a safe, comfortable retreat that proved particularly valuable during the 2020 pandemic.
