Cups Kamakura Cafe And HotelCups Kamakura Cafe And HotelCups Kamakura Cafe and Hotel is an innovative hospitality design project that seamlessly integrates a cafe restaurant with hotel accommodations in a beautifully renovated 50-year-old oceanfront property in Kamakura, Japan. Designed by Takuji Kamio and Ray Keida, this 230-square-meter establishment represents a masterful blend of historical preservation and contemporary design sensibilities. The design concept draws profound inspiration from its maritime location, incorporating water-inspired graphics and thoughtful spatial arrangements that harmonize with the coastal environment. The renovation process involved meticulous structural preservation work, where existing ceiling panels were removed to expose historical wooden structures, which were then treated with clear glossy lacquer and complemented by new steel supporting elements. The designers carefully balanced the integration of modern structural requirements with the building's original architectural character, paying particular attention to the interplay of shape, color, and material selection. The establishment features a distinctive gluten-free cafe serving organic beverages, while the hotel component offers an exclusive experience accommodating up to ten guests per day as a private booking. The project, completed in 2020, garnered international recognition by winning the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, acknowledging its exceptional approach to space utilization, preservation techniques, and innovative design solutions. The design process involved extensive research, including studying over 100 neighboring establishments to develop a unique positioning in the local hospitality landscape, while the careful demolition and renovation strategy allowed for adaptive design decisions based on discovered conditions.
