Paper For Light Residential House

Paper for Light Residential House is an innovative residential architectural design that masterfully integrates traditional oriental paper art concepts with contemporary sustainable living principles. Created by designer Ya-Jung Yvane Hsieh, this 100-square-meter meditation-focused living space exemplifies the harmonious fusion of form and function through its sophisticated implementation of Shoji Gates and Origami-inspired elements. The design's cornerstone feature is its ingenious light management system, comprising six adjustable semi-transparent Shoji Gates that serve as natural light diaphragms, effectively reducing dependency on artificial lighting while creating dynamic spatial experiences. The project's architectural composition emphasizes natural materials, primarily utilizing wood, traditional rice paper, and Diatom mud to regulate humidity and temperature naturally, thereby minimizing the need for mechanical climate control systems. The interior's most distinctive elements include a paper-crease-shaped ceiling that works in concert with horizontally-arranged wood flooring to create a compelling visual axis in the main corridor, offering dual atmospheric experiences of stability and flow. A particularly innovative feature is the multifunctional cantilever bench design, which ingeniously doubles as a track for the Shoji Gates, demonstrating exceptional space efficiency. The project, completed in 2018 in New Taipei City, garnered international recognition by winning the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, acknowledging its outstanding contribution to sustainable residential architecture and mindful living spaces. The design's thoughtful integration of traditional Eastern architectural elements with modern sustainability principles creates a contemplative environment that responds organically to natural light conditions while maintaining optimal indoor environmental quality.
