Gap Residential House

Gap Residential House is an innovative residential architecture project completed in Hyogo, Japan in 2021, designed by Michihiro Matsuo of METAPH ARCHITECT ASSOCIATES, that exemplifies sophisticated spatial composition through its deceptively simple exterior facade concealing complex interior dynamics. The structure's distinctive feature lies in its southern-protruding volume, deliberately angled to maximize natural light penetration through a thoughtfully designed courtyard, creating varied spatial dimensions and heights within. This architectural masterpiece employs bold diagonal elements throughout its interior, establishing a unique three-dimensional spatial configuration that challenges traditional residential design conventions. The two-story wooden structure, spanning 263.28 square meters on a 333.32-square-meter site, demonstrates exceptional structural engineering through the use of large-section laminated wood and metal joints, ensuring superior earthquake resistance crucial for Japanese construction standards. The design prioritizes sustainability and energy efficiency while maintaining privacy in densely populated areas, featuring high-performance insulation and innovative natural lighting solutions. The primary living spaces are elevated to the second floor, creating a floating effect while maintaining privacy through strategic positioning and landscaping. The project, which earned the Silver A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, represents a harmonious blend of functional efficiency, structural integrity, and aesthetic sophistication, particularly notable for its ability to create new patterns of spatial communication and interaction among residents through its varying angles and heights, all while maintaining the building's structural integrity and environmental performance.
