Smile Chair is an innovative furniture design that exemplifies the harmonious blend of aesthetic beauty and functional ergonomics, created by designer Xu Le in collaboration with a team of skilled artisans. This distinctive seating solution draws its inspiration from the gentle curve of a smile, featuring a backrest that mimics the upturned corner of a mouth, creating an engaging visual metaphor that brings warmth and personality to interior spaces. The chair's design philosophy centers on the concept of organic growth, evidenced in its unique construction where the armrests, front legs, and rear legs appear to emerge from a single piece of wood that has naturally split and evolved. Crafted from premium beech or North American walnut using advanced cold-curved wood technology, the chair demonstrates exceptional material efficiency while maintaining the noble character of natural solid wood. The design, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2021, showcases remarkable attention to detail in its flowing, silk-like lines that create captivating shadow effects. Measuring 597x484x760 millimeters and weighing 4.8 kilograms, the chair employs sophisticated wood bending processes and innovative domino connection structures in its construction. The development process, which spanned from April 2019 to August 2020, involved extensive collaboration between designers and woodworkers, utilizing 3D printed prototypes to perfect the challenging curved elements. The chair's ergonomic design prioritizes user comfort through carefully considered surface details and smoothly contoured armrests, while its aesthetic appeal draws inspiration from traditional painting and calligraphy, incorporating varying line weights to achieve visual harmony and structural integrity.
