Werkelkueche ToyWerkelkueche ToyWerkelkueche Toy is an innovative gender-neutral activity workstation designed for children that seamlessly combines the functional elements of traditional play kitchens and workbenches into a single, versatile play environment. Created by German designer Christine Oehme, this groundbreaking design challenges conventional gender stereotypes in children's toys through its thoughtful integration of diverse play possibilities. The design features a distinctive curved worktop crafted from thermally deformed birch plywood, creating a multifunctional surface that can serve as a sink, workshop area, or imaginative play space such as a ski slope. The aesthetic contrast between the warm wooden surface and powder-coated sheet steel front and rear walls adds both visual interest and durability to the design. Standing at 710mm x 440mm x 780mm, the Werkelkueche incorporates clever storage compartments that can be transformed into various play scenarios, from storage spaces to pretend bakeries. The design's innovative approach to open-ended play earned it the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in the Baby, Kids and Children's Products Design category in 2021, recognizing its significant contribution to challenging gender norms in children's products. The design emerged from extensive research involving parents and social workers, addressing the observation that gender stereotyping often begins even before birth through toy and color choices. This research-backed design approach focuses on creating an intuitive play space where children can freely explore different roles and develop their self-identity without the constraints of traditional gender-specific toys, making it a significant advancement in contemporary children's product design.
