Smartstreets-Smartbin™ Cigarette / Gum bin is an innovative urban waste management solution designed to address the global challenge of cigarette and gum litter in public spaces. This multiple-patented design features a unique dual-bin system that mounts back-to-back around existing street infrastructure such as lamp posts and sign posts, or as a solo unit on walls, railings, and plinths, effectively utilizing existing street assets without contributing to visual clutter. Crafted from recycled aluminum through gravity die casting and finished with corrosion-resistant powder coating, the bin demonstrates exceptional durability and sustainability in its construction. The design, measuring 340mm in height and 210mm in width, with a capacity of 630cc per side, incorporates a removable stainless steel two-part liner system that enables easy maintenance and servicing. Its versatile mounting system, developed through extensive consultation with over 200 councils, accommodates various infrastructure specifications worldwide through tailored fixing plates and side plates. The bin's innovative approach to urban waste management has been recognized with a Platinum A' Design Award in the Social Design category, acknowledging its significant contribution to environmental sustainability and urban cleanliness. Since its introduction in 2008, this transformative design has been adopted by more than 120 cities globally, effectively addressing the critical issue of cigarette and gum litter, which accounts for over 50% of litter discarded worldwide. The design's success lies in its ability to create predictable, convenient disposal networks while maintaining aesthetic harmony with existing streetscapes, ultimately contributing to more efficient and sustainable urban waste management practices.
