Zenstay HotelZenstay HotelZenstay Hotel is an architecturally significant boutique accommodation facility located on Dongji Island, at the easternmost point of mainland China, exemplifying a harmonious fusion of traditional island architecture and contemporary design sensibilities. The project, conceived and executed by architect Shengzhe Shen, represents a masterful renovation of an original stone house, transforming it into a sophisticated hospitality venue while preserving its cultural heritage. The 733-square-meter development encompasses nine sea-view guest rooms, a restaurant, a sober bar, a conference room, and a multifunctional viewing platform, all thoughtfully integrated into the hillside setting. The architectural intervention demonstrates exceptional sensitivity to local building traditions, employing a combination of original stone-timber structure and modern frame construction, utilizing materials such as concrete, local ashlar, red block, old larch wood, and used grey tiles. The design philosophy centers on bridging the seemingly opposing elements of traditional culture and modern functionality, achieved through innovative spatial organization and careful material selection. The project, which earned a Silver A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, showcases remarkable technical achievement in its construction methodology, particularly notable for overcoming significant logistical challenges in its remote island location through the implementation of traditional building techniques and local craftsmanship. The hotel's design emphasizes sustainability and cultural preservation while introducing contemporary comfort elements, creating a unique hospitality experience that resonates with both traditional architectural values and modern guest expectations.
